Crashes on Sonoma

As an app developer, I am currently beta testing the newest Macintosh operating system,14.0 Sonoma.  I have noticed a bug in QuickBooks that is 100% repeatable. Every time I click a drop-down menu, such as selecting an account, it will immediately crash. This is not company specific as I have four different companies I am running and it happens on all of them. How can I get this to the software team so they can be in working on a solution?

The fixes need to include QB2019

I just spent 30 minutes on Chat and was told that Quickbooks has no intentions on updating Desktop version 2019. They only support newer versions and I was instructed to contact sales.

Thanks for joining the Community and getting involved with this thread, DockadaBay.

What you were advised by our Customer Care team is correct, QuickBooks 2019 was discontinued last year. While you can upgrade to a newer version by getting in touch with our Sales team, you can also upgrade from within your product.

Here's how:

  1. In the top menu bar, go to Help, then Upgrade QuickBooks.
  2. Choose a version you want to upgrade to.
  3. Click Upgrade Now.
  4. If you'd like to keep a copy of your current version on the computer, turn on Keep old version on my computer.
  5. Select Let's go.

QuickBooks will download, install, and activate your new version and upgrade company files as necessary.

I've also included a detailed resource about upgrading which may come in handy moving forward: Upgrade QuickBooks Desktop Pro, Premier, or Enterprise

I'll be here to help if there's any questions. Have a wonderful Thursday!

Hello  @Bobby1432 ,

Thanks for reporting this crash.  And thanks for giving QuickBooks Mac a try on macOS Sonoma betas.

What version of QuickBooks Mac are you running when you encounter this?

I would like to get some more information from you about the crash, including any QuickBooks crash logs you have on your Sonoma system.  Please send me an email with your contact info to 'QuickBooksMacBeta' (at) "Intuit.com".   We are currently conducting external beta testing of a new version of QuickBooks Mac.  If you would also like to participate in external testing, please let me know.

Thanks for helping us improve QuickBooks Mac.

I had to downgrade Mac OS as well, qb does not even open, login screen and then nothing.

Hello there, @sb3421.

I appreciate you downgrading your MacOS to use QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT). Since it still doesn't work, let's clean install your QuickBooks Desktop for Mac so you can open and work with it. Let me guide you through the process.

Before doing so, you should have a backup copy of your company file so you can use it to restore when reinstalling the software.

Firstly, let's uninstall your QBDT for Mac. Before uninstalling, have your QuickBooks Desktop download file (or installation CD) and license numbers ready. Here's how:

  1. Close your QBDT for Mac.
  2. Go to the Finder menu, then select Applications.
  3. Drag the QuickBooks icon to the Trash.

Then, remove the QuickBooks PLIST files. To do so, you can follow the steps below:

  1. Go to the Finder menu.
  2. Hold down the Option key, then select Library.
  3. Open the Preferences folder.
  4. Find PLIST files that contain com.intuit.QuickBooks20XX, then move them to the Trash.
  5. Note: XX is the QuickBooks version you’re using.
  6. Empty the trash.

Once done, restart your device and reinstall QBDT for Mac.

Just in case you want to know more about QuickBooks for Mac, you can check out this user's guide for more guidance: QuickBooks Mac Plus User’s Guide.

Come back to this post if you have other concerns or follow questions about this. I'll be around to provide further assistance.

Hi,

I did the clean install but still nothing after qb login screen.

this happened only after the Sonoma 14 install.

I did not roll back the update because it is not such a short process.  I am still in Sonoma.

I would rather fix this problem than downgrading OS.

Any update to this issue?  Mac Sonoma is about a week or so from formal release, but the QB for Mac (both QB 2021 and QB 2023 Plus) don't open in Sonoma.

September 14, 2023

Wondering the same thing! Another fine QB experience.

September 14, 2023

I can see what you've been through about dealing with Sonoma and we know how much time it can take when something isn't working the way you need it.

As mentioned by my colleague above the SONOMA is still in beta release, which means not fully public release. Although we don't have a specific time frame as to when this will be mediated upon, rest assured, we're actively working to sort everything out.

I suggest visiting our reference page, which contains updates to the new enhancements of all QuickBooks Products every month: QB Firm of the Future.

For additional QuickBooks-related concerns, don't hesitate to post them here in the Community. We're always available and willing to lend a hand to your queries. Have a great day ahead.

macOS Sonoma 14.0, QuickBooks Desktop Mac 2021 V20.0.12 R13.2 (Build 1060)

Same old story, Intuit seems to have long since decided it doesn't like Mac users. Not sure why.

Anyway, I upgraded to Sonoma like others here but was surprised and not surprised QuickBooks was broken. I think it's the same bug that has plagued QuickBook for Mac thru a number of past macOS and QB versions, having to do with the Home Page, especially the Company Snapshot view.

Here's what I think works...

  • Quit/Force Quit QuickBooks
  • Back up your data file
  • Back up  ~/Library/Preferences/com.intuit.QuickBooks2021.plist
  • Delete ~/Library/Preferences/com.intuit.QuickBooks2021.plist
  • Launch QuickBooks directly from the /Applications folder (don't open an existing file)
  • In the Open dialog select Sample Files > Sample Product (or Sample Service)
  • At this point QuickBooks will beachball, so Force Quit
  • Relaunch QuickBooks from the /Application folder
  • QuickBooks should now partially work in the Sample Product file
  • Quit QickBooks
  • Open your own data file, it should now mostly work
  • DO NOT try to open the Home Page, this will crash QuickBooks!
  • Use ribbon or menu bar to navigate

HTH, YMMV,

-Max

This worked for me. Thanks!

September 28, 2023

I spoke with an Intuit / Quickbooks Mac support rep in Kentucky this morning and she assured me that they were aware of the problem and definitely working on a patch for update to the application and that it should be available in 24 to 48 hours. Fingers crossed!

September 28, 2023

Do I have better odds by buying a lottery ticket? I was just looking at QB alternatives.

September 28, 2023

Hello All,

Thank you for reporting any issues with Sonoma. Please continue to monitor for updates by going to the QuickBooks menu > Check for QuickBooks Updates… and take the update as soon as it becomes available.

Unable to open company file issue:

The issue identified here is that a hang can occur if the Home Page is open on launching a company file (or later opened). Please try the following workaround: From the No Company Open window, hold down the SHIFT key during the file open process. This will suppress any open windows (including the Home Page). Avoid opening the Home Page for the time being until an update is available. Please reply and let us know if you continue to have difficulties with file open even with window suppression.

Issues in 2019 or 2020:

Sonoma compatibility updates will not be available to users on 2019 or 2020. Currently, supported software versions are 2021 and newer. There are several options to avoid Sonoma issues and continue using your QuickBooks software version.

Option 1: Downgrade your machine to Ventura

Option 2: Set up a virtual machine with Ventura OS for QuickBooks operations

Other issues:

Please immediately report any encountered issues by going to the QuickBooks menu > QuickBooks Feedback. This will help the team confirm the resolution of issues and identify any possible outstanding problems.

Thank you!

Ben

Will the update be available outside of the application? The application crashes upon opening (spinning wheel), so I don't think I'd be able to access the menu as you described.

Also, I am on QB 2021 and somewhere in the thread seemed to indicate this was a QB 2019 issue, but I believe it's affecting everyone running the desktop app on Sonoma.

September 28, 2023

I have QuickBooks 2023 and the same thing is happening.  This is ridiculous!

September 29, 2023

I upgraded to Sonoma last night and now cannot get into Quickbooks - I get all the way in except when I try to open the checking feature then it crashes. I sent in a crash report. Please let me know asap how to fix this.

My small business can’t survive without my Quickbooks! Please get me up and running ASAP!
