Google Chrome browsers crash when Quickbooks Desktop Pro Plus 2021 is open

I upgraded my QB Desktop Pro 2018 to Pro Plus 2021 about 1 month ago. I don't open QB unless I have something to do. Within the last week (since I returned to work) whenever I have QB open, anything in Google Chrome crashes as soon as I navigate to a Google Chrome browser window. Currently I am using Windows Edge to type this message since I cannot do so in Chrome. When QB is shut down, no problems with Chrome. I don't know if this is a Chrome issue or a QB issue. Please help. Thank you.

I appreciate your prompt reply and for adding some clarifications, Paula.

I can share some steps on how to fix this issue so you can open your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) flawlessly.

Let's run the Quick Fix my Program from the QuickBooks Tools Hub. This scans your QBDT for errors and quickly resolves them. Let me show you how.

  1. Close your QuickBooks.
  2. Download our QuickBooks Tool Hub
  3. Open the file you downloaded (QuickBooksToolHub.exe).
  4. Follow the on-screen steps to install.
  5. When the install finishes, open the tool hub on your Windows desktop.
  6. Select Program Problems.
  7. Click Quick Fix my Program.
  8. Start QuickBooks Desktop and open your data file.

You can also check this link for more details: QuickBooks Desktop doesn't start or won't open.

Once you’re able to open your QuickBooks, I recommend updating it to the latest release to avoid any issues in the future. This way, we can also ensure that your software is up to date with the newest improvements and fixes.

I'm also attaching this link that you can read for reference: Reconcile an account in QuickBooks Desktop. This outlines the steps on how to match your bank and QuickBooks balance accurately.

Let me know in the Comment section if you need more help opening your QBDT. I'm just a few clicks away from you. Keep safe and have a good one!

I'd provide you a few troubleshooting steps to check if this is a web-browser issue, radar-9628.

We can try navigating using an incognito window. This way, we'll know if it's your regular browser, which causes this unexpected behavior.

Follow the shortcut keys, depending on what browser you're using.

  • Google Chrome: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Safari: Command + Shift + N
  • Microsoft Edge: Ctrl + Shift + P

If it works fine, go back to your main browser and clear the cache. It helps to troubleshoot and increases the performance of your browser. Also, they can use other supported browsers to better isolate the possibility of a browser-related issue.

Please let me know how this goes. I'm here to help you whenever you needed me. Have a good day!

When I followed the Google Chrome (control+shift+N) a private browser in Bing launched. Is that what I should expect? I expected something in Google Chrome. While that Bing InPrivate browser was up, I opened Zoho CRM and was able to use it with no crashing. I logged into the Roboform website with out issues. (I normally use the Google extension for Roboform in Google but don't know how to do that outside of Chrome.)

Am I using the right kind of browser to follow your instructions?

I just got off the phone with a QuickBooks technical support guy who when I asked about this issue, said that QB has no resolution for this problem as it isn't a QB problem. I told him that it didn't do it until we upgraded to 22 and he asked if it affected all users. No, only one! Then, he replied well you just answered your own question. If it were a QB problem it would affect all users. Nice customer support QB. Not our problem, you figure it out.

Netsuite is looking better and better all the time.

Hi there! I appreciate you for getting back to us! I'll share an insight to help you fix this browser issue with QuickBooks Desktop.

Since the issue persists on your end after following the steps provided by my colleague above, I suggest updating your current browser to the latest version. It's to ensure that this isn't a browser-related issue.

Also, ensure to update your QuickBooks Desktop software is in its latest release. This guarantees you have the most recent features and fixes.

Alternatively, you can also use the repair tool in QBDT to help you fix common errors. Here’s how:

  1. Close QuickBooks.
  2. Download the most recent version (1.5.0.0) of the QuickBooks Tool Hub.
  3. Navigate downloads of your computer and double-click the QuickBooksToolHub.exe file.
  4. Agree to the terms and conditions and follow the steps as they appear on your screen to complete the installation.
  5. Once the installation finishes, go to your Desktop screen and double-click the QuickBooks Tool Hub icon.

Then, you can run Quick Fix my program. Let me guide you on how:

  1. In the QuickBooks Tool Hub, select Program Problems.
  2. Click Quick Fix my Program.
  3. Start QuickBooks and open your data file.

For more information and detailed steps for this process, you can check out this article: Repair your QuickBooks Desktop for Windows.

Please let me know if you need clarification about QBDT, or there's anything else I can do for you. I'll be standing by for your response. Have a great day and stay safe.

I ran the Tool Hub a few weeks ago (with my first response). It worked.

The problem started again yesterday. I ran the Tool Hub again. The Tool Hub is updated to the correct version. My Chrome browsers are still crashing even after running the repair on my QBDT

I am also having this issue since I upgraded to QuickBooks Desktop Pro 2022.  If I open QuickBooks while having chrome open, chrome crashes. I am not accessing any accounts online though QuickBooks.  And this is the only time Chrome crashes. It is clearly a QuickBooks issue.

My Chrome browser is crashing quite often when either opening a company file or switching company files. I have spoken to support on at least 3 occasions and they insist is not related. I have used the tool hub and even had support log in remotely. Of course, it doesn't do it every time and I was unable to show them when they were logged in. This is QB 2022 and I've never had this issue until the upgrade in January. QB itself crashes from time to time now, as well. VERY frustrating.

May 26, 2022

I am having this same issue. I am very reluctant to call support as they never seem to be able to fix anything. I too am looking for an alternative to QB. The program used to be so great now it is just a mess. My Chrome browser crashes when I open QB Desktop Pro Plus 2022, and I only had this problem when I had to upgrade. Now I am paying a yearly fee for a program that has major problems.

May 26, 2022

Disabling the QB Web Connector and Intuit Data Protection at startup resolved the issue for my user, but obviously if you need those services, that's not an option. QB needs to really up their game in a lot of ways, or many are going to jump ship, and, support is worthless. They basically told me it's not their problem. I doubt that we'll renew next year, primarily because of that interaction with support.

May 26, 2022

I am also having same issue as others using QB Pro Plus 2022.  Except my Notepad closes as well as Chrome. Funny thing is that notepad will close if its already a saved file but a new notepad open that has not been saved stays open like it should.

Have not tried leaving lots of other apps open to see if they get closed out but these are usually always open on my desktop and not affected: Outlook 365, Adobe, Windows Explorer.

June 13, 2022

Commenting here to hopefully get a notification if someone finds a true fix. Called QB support and they said that it is not their application causing the crashes. Then I showed them the attached Event Viewer logs that I'd say state otherwise and they told me they will send this to their IT team and get back to me, but didn't even leave an open case. I have not heard back in 10 days. I referenced this forum that dates back to a year ago today. I have 5 users that deal with QB crashing Chrome, Outlook, and sometimes Excel when opening a company file. QB Tool Hub, repairing/re-installing QB, running file doctor on several company files, repairing/re-installing the crashing applications, Windows updates, and QB updates have not worked. We need QBWC running so disabling that isn't an option.

I've exhausted all of my troubleshooting, hopefully one day someone will post a fix that doesn't prevent the use of other features. For now, I am highly disappointed in QuickBooks Support and my users are also not happy with their applications crashing multiple times a day. NetSuite looks good right now.

We too are running into the same exact issue. No matter what the default browser is, whether it be chrome or edge something in QuickBooks is causing it to crash. I have seen this on two separate networks with two separate clients who use quickbooks at this point. Both are on Desktop/Enterprise 2022. Both use the QBDB service on their file servers. No network drops are occurring or any other issue other than QB causing these applications to crash. Support seems to insist that it is not their problem despite Quickbooks literally being the common denominator. We have even completely replaced one of the computers having the issue with no change. Below are some events that we have recorded leading up to the crash, hopefully they can be useful to determine the issue so that Intuit can fix this.

I'll help you fix the QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) crashing issue, @uggraphics. This way, you can work efficiently and complete your tasks in no time.

Please note that QBDT 2022 requires internet access and Internet Explorer 11 (32-bit). I'd recommend using the browser requirement to isolate the crashing issue. For more information, see this article: System requirements for QuickBooks Desktop 2022.

If you prefer using Chrome, I'd recommend following the workarounds provided by the previous user and Fiat if you haven't already.

I'll outline a few steps below in case you require them.

  • Ensure that your QBDT release is R5
  • Update your office 365 to the latest release. Proceed with the following steps:

  1.  Open an Office application and select the File menu.
  2. Choose Account or Office Account.
  3. In the Product Information window, hit on Update Options next to Office updates.
  4. Click Update Now.

  •   Disabled the QuickBooks Web Connector. Go as follows:

  1. Open the Start menu and click All Programs.
  2. Click Startup, followed by QuickBooks.
  3. Right-click Exchange Data With Web Services.
  4. Click Delete, then Yes to disable the connector.

Hi MichelleBh!

Thanks for the post, but for most of us, all those steps, and several others have been tried, with little or no success. Something else we tried early on was the recreation of the Chrome profile in C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome. Ordinarily, this forgives a multitude of Chrome sins, but had no effect on this problem. For my user, at least. If anyone tries this, I'd recommend just renaming the profile to something like Chrome.old, so you can easily roll it back if it doesn't help.

Also, I'm afraid that since Internet Explorer has reached end of life and is no longer supported, its use has become an unacceptable security risk. For testing and verification purposes though, I will briefly change the affected user's default browser to IE and see what happens, but QB should probably address that requirement.

As a bit of background, most of us with this issue seem to be running either QBDT-21 or QBDT-22 via the client-server model. QBDT-18 suffered from none of these problems, but from the day QBDT-22 was installed, for us at least, this has been a problem.

With the frustration many of us are experiencing, and in the interest of good customer service, it's really time for QB developers to dive in and figure out what's going on, and patch it.

June 27, 2022

After struggling with this issue for over a month now, I ended up replacing all of my affected user's computers to solve the problem and this seems to have helped. I am thoroughly disappointed in QB support for not providing a solution or even workaround for this problem (even with "Enterprise" level support). Will certainly remember this next time we go to buy any Intuit product.

For what it's worth, we had to update one of our unaffected user's QuickBooks application over the weekend (QB only lets you ignore an update so many times before it forces you to install) and she just reported Chrome crashing when opening a company file for the first time. We are getting her a new workstation; terrible solution but it is the only thing we've tried that works.

Hello there

This is not the kind f service we want to experience. We appreciate for taking time to let us know what how you fixed the issue. This way, we can share the experience with the team.

Please know that you can always get back to us if you have any other concern. Taker.

@Maybelle_S  Don't run to "THE TEAM" with this as a solution, a new computer does NOT resolve the problem for everyone.

Same issues on my old computer so I purchase a new computer. The new computer has an 11th Gen i7 processor, and 32GB of memory, yes, 32 that is not a typo, all other specs are well above QB requirements. QB crashes excel and chrome every time when opening or closing a company file. The only things installed on the new computer are QB Dekstop Pro Plus, Office 365, Adobe Reader and Chrome. From the very first initial opening of a company file QB aborted and crashed Chrome and Excel.

When opening a company file I have to have Chrome and Excel both closed before then I can open and use QB and before I close a company file I have to make sure that I save everything and close Excel and Chrome first, then close the company file or I will lose work and everything will crash.

I also use Adobe Reader open when working in Quickbooks and be able to edit PDF's. If I have a company file open BEFORE I open a PDF in Adobe I can not edit the PDF. I have to have Adobe and the PDF open first, then open Quickbooks to be able to edit PDFs.

The common factor here is Quickbooks. This IS absolutely a QB problem and QB is the cause. It is ridiculous that there are this many people complaining and Inuit is not accepting responsibility for distributing a defective product and is not doing anything to resolve it. This is unacceptable and speaks volumes about how much Intuit does not care about its customers.

Running the Tool Hub DOES NOT WORK either!

You would think with the huge increase in price this year we'd get better support.

Also, I want to remark on another "Solved" thread that said that running in the admin account fixed the problem. I always run in an admin account and still have the problem.

Ridiculous that these threads are being marked as solved.

June 28, 2022

Same issue here with Enterprise 22 on Windows 10 and Chrome.  Chrome and Quickbooks seem to crash each other.  I've had the same frustrations with Quickbooks support and don't have the time to spend hours with them to tell me it's not their fault.  22 has been a nightmare overall.  They removed scan manager, it's crashing, the 401k reports no longer properly report the employer contribution data correctly.   I guess 22 is Intuit's ME/Vista/8... Lucky us.

June 28, 2022

I noticed this in the application log seconds after Chrome crashes.  I'm assuming it's related as it's consistent. This happens while I'm loading Quickbooks and opening the company file.
