QuickBooks Online Corrupt Database Repair Scam

I recently experienced reconciliation issues with my quick books online account for my business.  That has happened a few times in the past and the folks on the quick books help line have been able to assist me get the account correct.  This time when I asked for help via the Help button, someone called me back and then after looking at the issue, transferred me to a person that told me I had a corrupted database.  I thought this was strange since the database is hosted by Intuit/Quickbooks.  I asked many questions and all the person wanted to do was charge me $500 to fix the database or $750 to have an annual plan to fix the database when it gets corrupted in the future.  We declined his offer to fix the database and using the help button asked for a call back again.  The new customer support person explained that this was a scam.  Has anyone else experienced this?  What concerns me most is that Quickbooks help called me back and then transferred  me someone that is working the scam.

Hello,

Ensuring that you get the help you need, when you need it, by an Intuit expert, is a priority. We recognize that there are multiple companies that mask their support to look like they represent QB. While we understand that googling is kind of a default option to find information, please be cautious when clicking links and calling phone numbers. The safety and security of your account matters.

Support is included with your QuickBooks Online subscription, for QuickBooks Desktop, there may be some instances when there would be a charge incurred.

If something doesn't feel right, ask questions:

  • What is the name of your company - The answer should be Intuit. Don't ask " are you QB support", they could say yes, and technically not be lying as they are trying to provide support for QB.
  • What name will show up on my bank account/credit card statement?

I'm here to provide information on the best way to contact QuickBooks support, when you need them.

If you are using QuickBooks Online:

Contact QBO Support

  1. Sign in to your QuickBooks Online company.
  2. Select Help (?).
  3. Select either tab to get started:
    • Assistant: Get quick, personalized answers. Select a suggested option, or type a question or topic you need help with. If you decide you need further help, you can still Talk to a human.
    • Search: Search the QuickBooks Online knowledge base directly, or select Contact Us and choose a way to connect with us:
      • Start a chat with a support expert.
      • Get a callback from the next available expert.
      • Ask the community to get help from businesses like yours.

Has anyone experienced what happens if you give them access to your quick book accounts. Unfortunately we thought we were talking with Intuit and didn't realize it was a scam until after hanging up. They had access for a couple of hours. We are calling all banks and vendors to alert them. I'm not sure what we need to do to protect ourselves and undo any damage done.

Thanks for any information.

@Kelly T1

Are you using QB Online or Desktop? Did they install something on your machine?

Hello, I received an email that looks like it’s from Intuit requesting payment. I called and they acted like they were the company requesting I be at my computer to log on! I said I shouldn’t need to do that they should be able to tell me everything about my account! I new it was a scam and wanted to forward the email to you. The reply was going to [email address removed]  and [email address removed] I would love to see them get caught! Wanted to share this so others don’t get taken!!!

Hello there, @debbiegallaher

I appreciate you for sharing this information with us.

Data privacy and security is a serious topic, and here at Intuit, we treat it as such. This is the reason why our Technical Support team's phone numbers and chat links are no longer available on our web pages. To get a hold of our Technical Support team, you'll have to do it within QuickBooks Online (QBO). This ensures that you'll be routed to the correct support department in the soonest time possible.

You can refer to this article for the correct steps: QuickBooks Online Support. Please take note of their operating hours, so you know when they're available.

I'll also share this article with you: Privacy and security in QuickBooks. You'll find a brief description of how we handle your company information and keep it secure. It also has other links related to security, which provides you tips about this matter.

Let me know in the comments below if you have other questions about data privacy and security in QBO. I'll be sure to take care of it.

I believe I encountered a scam today on the QB support hotline as well. I called a number and sent me to [removed], a foreign man answers and asks all my info. I was having issues with a sales tax calculation, he asks me to go to www.quickconnects.support which brought me to a page to download TeamViewer software to my Mac so he could access my laptop. It gave him access in and instead of helping me inside QB page, he went straight to my Mac Terminal and had me on hold for 10 minutes, he then informed me that my QB files were not syncing with QB software and that I had no choice but to “RECOVER my Files” with them online for $499. He was so adamant about getting me to make a decision, he refused to even let me hang up and call my husband before I paid. I quickly felt this wasn’t right and hung up, booted him off my Mac screen, turned off wifi and deleted all traces of his downloads from my laptop. Afterwards, I did some research and realized it was indeed a scam. FYI, QUICKBOOKS will use SmartLook located INSIDE your QBO account to share your screen and they aren’t able to click on anything from their side of screen. Also, their support is free. Hope this helps!

Hi,

On Thursday the 21st of April, I had a issue , was messaging on the help section. A  phone number came up-[Removed].

The first time was on hold fro about 20 minutes someone answered and the call got disconnected. Called again after about another 10 minutes my call was answered.

I had to give access trough TeamViewer and I was told the database was corrupted , this needs to be fixed my plan did not cover recovery. It is going to cost $449.99 for 3months or $599.99 for 1 year plan.

Needed a credit card payment, to start the work.

I decided to research the company and saw the comments. then I knew for sure this was a scam.

Thank you for posting this information.

Just had this happen to me - luckily I figured out they were not QB Intuit before I gave them payment.  Same scenario - My Quickbooks suddenly froze up ( i think due to an update but am unsure)  I tried closing and reopening and that wouldn't work.  I googled QB Enterprise support and came across a number [removed] and I called it and I can't remember how they answered but I believe it was intuit support.  I was in a panic and not thinking clearly until they told me it would cost me $1249.99 to purchase data recovery.  Of course when you think of all the data lost, it was going to have to be worth it, UNTIL, he told me that Internal Accounting Services is what I would see on my CC.  I said oh no, we are not doing this.  I asked point blank if he was QB Intuit and he did say no.  I deleted everything he installed on my computer, restarted my computer and voila, my QB works just fine.

I had a similar issue today while calling for support with QB Payroll.  I used the following phone number:  [removed].  I was careless and pulled it of a quick google search.  This is a SCAM phone number.  The people at the other end gained access to my desktop with my permission and said my database was corrupt and I would need to purchase a 3-year DB Support contract for more than $3,000.  I realized this was a scam when the pricing was provided in a Notepad Text box.  I discontinued the call and shut my pc off.

I later reached out to QB support through the chat option and my issue was identified and repaired right away.

BEWARE OF THIS SCAM!!

QuickBooks Scams you also in different ways.

This happened to me today.  I was charged 1500 to "fix" and get support for Quickbooks.  Quickbooks transferred me to Reckon Books unknowingly.  This seems to be a Quickbooks problem.  Is someone in Quickbooks doing this for a commission?

Thank you so much for the info, I was on the line with them for about an hour and they had me snowed until they wanted $1200 to repair, then wanted to be paid before the service was rendered. Additionally, the company name - I thought - should have something to do with Quickbooks and it didn't.  My neck hair started to stand up and I jumped on another computer and googled them and got this. I think you saved me $1200. Thank you!

Contributing to this if only to bring some more attention to the issue!

Add yet another casualty to this scam. Needed to speak to Quickbooks customer service this morning and googled "Quickbooks help". The first result, a sponsored search result, led us to this webpage: "aespatech.com-qbo-customer-service". The page is clearly designed to look like the quickbooks website.

We called the service number displayed on the page. Thinking we were speaking with QB, we granted them access to our computer screen and were told that our "database was corrupted" and needed to log out of all QB accounts for 2-3 hours to fix the issue. They charged us $1200, which we've already contested with our bank.

They are related and offer license in the web store but the web store is not working. Suspicious.
