Question

How do I add downloaded statements from Santander?Tried csv and txt, however they aren't compatible. 700 transactions in total which look like they need manually changed

Csv file format leaves  the description as ****, and txt format would need the word description changed to memo 700 times.
Is there an easier way?

Welcome to the Community, Stuart.

I'm here to ensure you can add your downloaded statements to QuickBooks Online (QBO).

To import bank transactions using CSV, make sure to choose the correct columns in the mapping stage. Otherwise, QuickBooks will not be able to read the data. To make the mapping stage easier, consider these factors before uploading the file again:

  • Special characters are not allowed.
  • Zeros (0) are not allowed anywhere in the file ($0 should be left blank).
  • Correct any transactions that display an amount in the Description column.
  • Remove the word amount if it appears in the name of the Credit or Debit column. They should only read "Credit" and "Debit" without the word "amount."
  • MAC users must save the file as a Windows CSV file.
  • Correct and standardize the Date format to a single format (for example, dd/mm/yyyy)
  • Some banks provide the day of the week and include it in the Date column (for example, 20/11/2018 TUE in column A), which is not an acceptable format. You need to remove the day of the week.

Also, you can upload CSVs in either of the following 3-column or 4-column formats. These are the only columns QuickBooks can handle.

The 3-column format

The 4-column format

To learn more about the file format, see this article: Format CSV files in Excel to get bank transactions into QuickBooks.

Once everything is fine, you can start importing the transactions into QBO again.

After that, you can now review the downloaded transactions and put them in the correct accounts. Here's an article for your guide: Categorise and match online bank transactions in QuickBooks Online.

Don't hesitate to leave a reply if you have further questions about importing your transactions in QBO. I'll be around to assist. Keep safe, and have a good one!

Explore csv2qbo converter tool as a workaround.

As an additional option, use a backup restore app to lower any risk.
