How do I set up a sole trader who has a trading year end date of 5th April. I can only see that QBO goes to a month end 30th or 31st

Welcome to the Community page, 

 

So it is not possible to set a specific date, the accounting year will always run from the 1st day of the month selected, you would need to customise the date range for any reports you look at.
