Question

How do you remove an account from the chart of accounts? The account has never been used. I don't just want to make it inactive, I want it gone.

Let me share some information about making an account inactive in QuickBooks Online, nwalters

While QuickBooks Online (QBO) doesn't allow permanent deletion of accounts from your chart of accounts. Instead, you can make them inactive to hide them from your lists and reports.

Also, you can't permanently delete an account, except by merging it into another account. When you make an account inactive, its transactions are not removed. Transactions associated with any deactivated (deleted) account remain intact.

On the otherhand, there are specific accounts in QuickBooks Online (QBO) that can't be deleted because they are default accounts. Some accounts require extra steps before you can make them inactive:

Once you're ready to make an account inactive, just follow this steps:

  1. Go to the Gear ⚙ icon.
  2. Select Chart of accounts.
  3. Find the account you want to make inactive.
  4. Click on the Action ▼ dropdown, and then select Make inactive.

I've added this article so you can get more information and find out how to make an account active again: Make an account inactive on your chart of accounts in QuickBooks Online.

Let me know if you still need further assistance with your chart of accounts. I'll be glad to help. Take care and have a great day!
