I am late in closing out my year-end. When I run the balance sheet to the right dates I get an anomalous figure in the retained profit section with a negative number

I can see anything in the income statement that would cause that.

Have you reconciled all bank accounts, including any credit card accounts, to the end of year for the period that they're looking at.
