Question

I have set up a new category which should be type Expenses, but it's been set up as Cash at bank and in hand. How do I change the type?

Hello, @ken-kcamarketing.

I can share the details on how you can change the type of the new category you've created in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

The steps to do this are pretty quick and easy. All you need is to go to the Chart of Accounts (COA) and change it from there. Here's how:

  1. In QBO, go to the Gear icon at the top right.
  2. Select Chart of Accounts.
  3. Locate the account to change.
  4. From the Action column drop-down menu, choose Edit.
  5. Pick the new Account Type from the drop-down menu.
  6. Select the appropriate Detail Type from the drop-down list.
  7. Tick Save and Close. You are prompted that changing the Account Type may affect your accounting and reporting.
  8. Hit Yes in the prompt to change the account.
