Question

We sell events and have set them up as services using rev recognition. When I run a sales report will it show sales based on invoice date or service date?

Our courses are often in the future so invoice date is booked date and service date is date of course. This works great for income recognition for accounting purposes.
But we also want to track sales as in actual income to check against targets and see what has come in that month.
What reports will show this, do the sales /budget reports use the invoice of service date?

Let's figure out the report we can run when setting up revenue recognition in QuickBooks Online (QBO), @claire-kelton-ri

After setting up a revenue recognition, we can create the invoice so QuickBooks will start the revenue recognition schedule.

After this, we can customize the Sales by Product/Service Detail report. It will show the report based on the invoice date.

Here's how:

  1. Select Reports on the left menu and search Sales by Product/Service Detail.
  2. Click the Customize button and go to the Rows/Columns section.
  3. Click Change columns and put a checkmark in the box for the information needed.
  4. Click Run report.
  5. You can also rearrange the row for your preference.
