Bug: Products and Services Categories breaks our Products and Services

QBO recently pushed a new feature called "categories" which appears to have replaced the "sub-product" feature.

As it is currently implemented, it breaks our product and feature list because it "does not allow for duplicates" (even when I cannot find the duplicate in question). I think it's considering the "Category" itself to be the duplicate.

For example, "Closets" has become "Closets:Closets", and I cannot make it "Closets" anymore.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention regarding not allowing duplicate categories. I'm here to help you with your concern in QuickBooks Online (QBO), @ljoseph11.

Please note that QuickBooks Online doesn't offer the functionality to allow duplicates in the products and service category unless you're adding them as subcategories.

Going back to your setup ("Closets: Closets), when you attempt to change a subcategory with the same name to a parent category by unchecking Is a sub-category box, an error message will appear, stating that the "Closets" category already exists.

As a workaround, you'll have to slightly change the name of the subcategory to be able to save the changes. You can also delete the subaccount with the same name by selecting Remove from the Action drop-down.

Since you can't locate the duplicate, you'll want to adjust the number of rows displayed by clicking the small Gear or Cog icon on the table. This way, you'll able to view all your categories.

If it's not showing, you can perform some browser troubleshooting steps. Open your account in a private browser. You can use these keyboard shortcuts to launch the window:

  • Google Chrome: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Microsoft Edge: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Safari: Command + Shift + N

If it fixes the issue, go back to the regular browser and clear the cache of your regular browser. Otherwise, you can use other supported browser to further isolate the problem.

Moreover, you can check on this article to learn how to set up product and service items you buy and sell, but don't track as part of your inventory in QuickBooks Online for future reference:  Add product and service items to QuickBooks Online.

If you have other queries for creating product and service categories. Just reply to the comment, and I will be glad to assist you.
