Hello thepointbookstor,

Yes, you canimport inventory items in QuickBooks Online. You can also override the existing quantity of these items. Here's how:

  1. Click on the Gear icon.
  2. Under Tools, choose Import Data.
  3. From the list, select Products and Servics.
  4. In the Import Products and Services page, select Browser button. (You can also download the sample file to see how the columns look like.)
  5. Find and select the Excel file then select Open.
  6. Select Next to continue.
  7. Map your data.
  8. Click on Next.
  9. Check the Overwrite all values for each product or service that you import with the identical name. (This can't be undone.)
  10. Click on Import.

If you have any questions, please let me know. I'm here to help.

I want to overwrite the "name" field for several items using and upload in bulk.

I just want values in that field to be overwritten, is there a way to do that through and upload without affecting anything else (i.e. cost, QTY on hand, etc)?

Thank you for getting back to us, @casimoran

When you import an item with the same name and let it overwrite all the values, this will merge any imported Product/Service, but will not affect the cost, QTY, etc.

I'm using QuickBooks Online. Can I export and then re-import products file if I want to change the value of the "Product Name" field. The answers seems to be no, as "Product Name" is the index field of the Products database. I can override other fields in an re-import, but having new value for "Product Name" will just *create* a new product, and not *modify* an existing product. Is my understanding correct? How can I bulk-modify "Product Name" through re-import by override?

You got it right, howardse.

You need to navigate the Add/Edit Multiple List window and modify multiple existing product names after importing them.

I've added this link for additional information: Add, edit, and delete items.

You can also use the IIF file to move item list to QuickBooks. Check out this article for instructions: Export, import, and edit IIF files.

Are these instructions for the Desktop Version? I am using the Online Version and I have 8000 Product Names that imported incorrectly and I need a quick way to overwrite them.

Yes, those instructions are for the Desktop version of QuickBooks, Page Custom Supply LLC.

I can provide the steps for the Online version of your account. When you import products and services in QuickBooks Online, there's an option

to Overwrite all values for each product or service that you import with the identical nameDoing this will merge any imported Product or Service with the same name as an existing one. Here's how you can achieve this:

Importing Products and Services

  1. Click the Gear ⚙ icon, then Import Data.
  2. Select Products and Services.
  3. Click Browse and find the file containing your items.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to map and upload your data.
  5. On the screen that lists all of the Products and Services to be imported, check the box at the bottom if you'd like to Overwrite all values for each product or service that you import with the identical name.
  6. Once finished, click Import.

The system will create an automatic Inventory Adjustment if a different quantity is being imported. Check out this link for your reference: Import products and services from Excel.

Also, you can use the audit log to see how it affects the existing product.

My Problem is the Name. I need a way to overwrite the name. All other information is correct.

Thank you for reaching back out to the Community, Page Custom Supply LLC. Although you have the ability to overwrite the value for the products and services, the option to overwrite names is unavailable. This would have to be done manually. However, I will take note of this and send this suggestion to our Product Developers. They are always looking for ways to enhance your business experience. I invite you to follow our blog to stay up to date. I hope you enjoy the rest of your day!
