Thank you for turning to the Community about your concern about changing your chart of accounts, brolindarlena.

Maintaining a well-organized account is important. It lets you track your transactions easily and generate accurate reports.

QuickBooks Online (QBO) automatically creates default accounts in your chart of accounts when you set up your company. Keep in mind that there are certain default categories in the chart of accounts that can't be modified. This reference provides a detailed list of accounts you can edit, merge, or make inactive: Manage default and special accounts in your QuickBooks Online chart of accounts.

If the category you wish to change is not on the list, let's go ahead and update the information. Simply follow these steps:

  1. In your company, navigate to the Gear icon ⚙ and select Chart of accounts.
  2. On the Chart of Accounts page, look for the category you're working on.
  3. Click the View register or Run report link and select Edit to open the Account window.
  4. In the Name section, enter the correct information for the account.
  5. Press the Save and Close button.

For your other concern, I need to ask for more details to help me get on the same page. Are you trying to edit the parent account and make it into a sub-account?

While I wait for your response, I've got some handy resources that you might need in the future. The following links contain topics on how to edit the type for the parent account, keep your chart of accounts organized, and delete a category:

Feel free to get back to me here if you have additional questions about changing your chart of accounts or assistance navigating through QBO. It's always my pleasure to assist you in managing your books. Enjoy your weekend, brolindarlena.
