Can you import customized invoice templates from previous versions of QB for Mac?

I upgraded from QB for Mac 2013 to 2016 and my customized invoice template did not transfer with the company file. Any way to access this template and avoid having to create it again? All previous invoices are using a default template that comes with the software so not only am I unable to create new invoices but my old invoices are unsuitable. All online help suggests Lists>Templates but this option is not available on my version. Creating a new invoice template seems to be problematic as well as nothing shows up on my screen after selecting New Template or Edit current Template under the drop down menu for Current Template.

Hi there Kirsten M.,

Customized templates created in QuickBooks for Mac do not export to other company files. They are confined to the company file in which they were created. Here's how to export and import templates in QuickBooks for Mac:

  1. From the Customers menu, select Create Invoices.
  2. At the top of the invoice, click the Invoice template selection button and choose Edit Template. This opens the Layout Designer view.
  3. Click File at the top of the Layout Designer.
  4. The template can now be exported or imported as desired.

Feel free to let me know if you have any questions, I'll be happy to help.

Could we import a customized template of word format in QuickBooks desktop mac as we can import word template in QuickBooks online through QBO EZ map fields?

Hi there, MH31.

For now, you can only use Template Files (*.DES) file type to import a template in QuickBooks Desktop for Mac. Here's an article for reference: File types and extensions used by QuickBooks Desktop.

You'll want to check out some third-party apps that can help import Word templates. You can go to the Apps for QuickBooks Desktop website and search for a keyword like Import Word template to get started.

If you're using the current template in QuickBooks Desktop for Mac, you can customize it. Here's an article for the instructions: Customize form templates in QuickBooks Desktop for MAC.

I'll be around if you have any follow-up questions or other QuickBooks Desktop concerns. Take care and stay safe.

Custome templates are only lost when converting across platforms. Assuming you have confirmed your customized invoice template does not show in the drop down list, use the feedback option, (quickbooks>quickbooks feedback) and submit a bug report.

The templates should have converted.  Please contact me at my email address and include a link to this forum topic for context.  Hoping we can have a look at your file to diagnose the problem.
