Hi there, @pam-veteranshvac.

Thanks for taking the time to reach out to the QuickBooks Community. I hope you're having a great day so far.

Before we begin, please know that class tracking is only available in QuickBooks Online Plus and Advanced. If you currently have one of these subscriptions, would you mind clarifying if are you getting any error messages when trying to add a new class? If so, what error are you receiving?

While I await for your response, I'm including some steps to turn on the class tracking feature, along with some steps to add a new class below.

To turn on the class tracking feature:

  1. Go to the Gear Icon and choose Account and Settings.
  2. Click on Advanced, then select the Categories section to edit.
  3. Checkmark Track classes.
  4. Checkmark Warn me when a transaction isn't assigned a class. This is optional, but it means that when you look at reports, you know everything's been classified.
  5. Under Assign classes, select One to entire transaction or One to each row in transaction.*
  6. Hit Save, then Done.

To add a new class:

  1. Go to the Gear Icon and choose All Lists.
  2. Tap on Classes.
  3. Hit New. Give this class a name.
  4. To add a sub-class, select Is a sub-class and select the main class. You can nest up to five classes.
  5. Select Save.

Once you’re all set up, you can start to track your transactions by class.

For additional information about how class tracking works in QuickBooks Online, please feel free to browse through the help guides I'm including below.

I'll be sure to keep an eye out for your reply. Please let me know if there is anything else I can assist you with. Take care!
