Question

How can I have an earlier inventory tracking start date after converting from QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online?

We converted from QBD to QBO on January 1, but we have POs that were physically received and billed by the vendor before January 1.

QBO is not letting us post these bills with December dates for these POs because it says the date pre-dates the inventory tracking start date, which seems to have been automatically set to January 1 as part of the conversion process.

We checked whether we can change the inventory tracking start date for individual items and found that option does not seem to be available.

One workaround would be to post them with a date of January 1 (or later) but that would not properly reflect the business's accounting activity for 2023 and 2024.

Any other ideas?

Thank you.

Hello there, dan.

I'm glad to share information about your inventory concern in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

In this case, I suggest redoing the migration process and ensuring to properly set up inventory. If you're converting from QBDT to QBO Plus or Advance, you can refer to this article for guidance: Set up inventory after converting from QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online.

Additionally, you can do a manual entry of an item. If you want to set up product and service items in QBO, I'll guide you through the process.

Here's how to add a new product or service item.

  1. Go to Sales, then select Products & services.
  2. Select New and choose Non-inventory or Service.
  3. Enter a Name for the product or service and an SKU, if you track them.
  4. From the Category dropdown, select the category that best describes your product or service.
  5. If you sell the item, confirm the checkbox is selected for I sell this product/service to my customers.
  6. In the Description on sales forms field, enter a description.
  7. Enter an amount in the Sales price/rate field.
  8. Choose the account you want to use to track the sale from the Income account dropdown.
  9. In the Sales tax section, sales tax is applied by default based on location. Then, click Save and Close.

Please refer to this article for further guidance about the process of adding a service or product’s purchasing info and track and manage product and service items you sell: Add product and service items to QuickBooks Online.
