Question

How can I stop cash received being posted to a generic Sales GL account instead of specific GL revenue accounts?

Because of the above, I have to correct by manual JE from my GL Sales acct. to revenue accounts where the credit should be booked. Is there some "naming" convention that I need to change?

Hi there, davidwpeace.

Thanks for turning to the Community for support. I want to make sure your cash is recorded in the correct account in QuickBooks Online.

How are you entering the received cash; by clicking + New > Receive payment or + New > Bank Deposit? The good news is you can change the account for the payment to be deposited from either of those screens. Here's how:

Receive payment:

1. Click the + New button in the top left corner.

2. Select Receive payment.

3. Choose the Customer and Cash as the payment type.

4. Select the correct account for the payment to be deposited to.

5. Click Save and close when you're finished.

Here's a visual of how this will look in your account:

If you are entering the cash payment with a Bank Deposit, here are the steps to change the account:

1. Click the + New button in the top left corner.

2. Choose Bank deposit.

3. Select the account for the amount to be deposited to in the top left.

4. Enter the customer and choose cash as the payment type.

5. Click Save and close when you're done.

With this info you'll be able to change the account where your cash will be recorded. Please drop a comment below if you have any other questions. I'll be here to lend a hand.
