Question

How do I add a contractor who is a US citizen living in Germany? The contractor setup requires that I include a US state in the address (and doesn't allow a country).

Hi there, cpraccounting. I can share some information so you can add your contractor in QuickBooks Online (QBO) successfully. 

 

Yes you're correct. QuickBooks only allows you to enter US addresses when adding contractors.  You can use the contractors US address to add them to QBO, even if they are living in Germany. 

 

Here's how:

 

  1. Go to the Payroll menu and choose Contractors. 
  2. Select the Add a contractor button.
  3. Enter the name and email address, and click Add contractor.
     

 

I'd recommend following the flow given in the articles below. They provide details about setting up contractors and tracking payments to generate the 1099 form.

Thanks for the suggestion. I know how to add a US address for a contractor. The whole problem is that the contractor lives in Germany and does not have a US address. US citizens who live abroad still have US tax liabilities.

We cannot add a non-permanent US address, including a PO box, for QuickBooks Online Payroll. Forcing the program to accept the PO box could have implications for you and your employees' taxes.

 

To track payroll and taxes for employees with non-permanent US addresses, consider using an alternative method outside of QuickBooks Online. It's advisable to seek guidance from a tax advisor on how to handle overseas employees.
