How do I add markup to my cost of products on an estimate on the online version of QuickBooks? The desktop version had a column for mark up via % or amount.

I need to be able to enter different markups on each and every estimate as it changes with each project. If I have to hand calculate this, I might as well save my money and use Word to create estimates and invoices and excel to keep track of our small business!

The desktop version works perfect for us except we have two users and were using dropbox to synchronize between the computers.

Hello smckay,

The markup feature in QuickBooks Online is used only with billable expenses on the vendor side.  So when you have billable time or charges that you pass on to the customer - you're able to set a markup for when you invoice that customer.

Right now, there's no option to add a Markup column on estimates for QuickBooks Online. You may send a product suggestion through this link: http://feedback.qbo.intuit.com. This will make our product developer team aware of how you want the program to work. We'd really appreciate your suggestion since most of our features come from our customers.

Please let me know if there's anything else that you need help with.

I find it frustrating that the online version does not have all the features of the less expensive desktop version! I will be going back to the desktop version until this along with other features are added to the online version. It is a shame as the online would work 100% better for my company which is why we were willing to pay $700/year verses the one time $150 desktop version. To say I am disappointed is putting it nicely.

I agree!  I attempted to go back to desktop, however while the customer can convert their data from desktop to online, it does not allow us to convert the data from online to desktop.  So you are at the mercy of support to do this transition for you.  I had them do mine....could not work for 3 days while they were doing it.  In a small business where I am the sole office/accounting/HR staff that is hard to do.  Anyway, after the conversion I went to Quickbooks desktop and uploaded the file they sent me thinking I would probably have to perform some tweaks here and there.  NOPE!  Since we use multiple currencies, EVERYTHING that was paid out in a foreign currency (although it was converted in my original file to the USD amount) was entered in the desktop as the FOREIGN CURRENCY AMOUNT.  I would have had to go back and change 4 years of foreign transactions to the USD amount.  After 3 days being down, I had no time for that and have not had the time to devote calling back in once again and going through whatever is necessary for them to fix it.  Its like once you sign up for the online, you are held, hostage.  These days with cloud storage, the online really isn't necessary considering you can just save a back up to a cloud server/drive and pull it from anywhere.  However, I wonder if after doing the online updates for the software, the payroll portion of the in order to perform Direct deposit which would be more economical?  With the payroll portion and the quickbooks advanced, I am paying $200 a month!

I am right there with you this is stupid that something so advanced can't do a mark up.

Has anyone found an alternative to use such as a third party quoting software, with these features we want, that may could even integrate with QBO?

Hi Rockstar,

Let's search for an app that you can use for the markup.

You can click on the Apps menu in the left navigation bar. Then, search for something like quote or estimate.

On the other hand, feel free to submit feedback about this from your QBO company. You can click on the Gear icon and choose Feedback.

If you have other questions, please go back to this thread.

The Original Post question is as clear as you can get, provided if you're also familiar with QuickBooks Desktop. See screenshot below and look for Mark Up column. It's available in desktop and it works fine.

"How do I add markup to my cost of products on an estimate on the online version of QuickBooks? The desktop version had a column for mark up via % or amount."

The simple answer as relates to this question is, it's not available in QuickBooks Online (on any plans even if you pay $150 per month) yet.

The Estimate screen in QBO still looks some high school kids designed this. And this is also not even a customizable form at this time.

Any workaround suggestions are just ridiculous, do not even meet basic...

I'm leaving you Quickbooks!!

I've been using QBO for the past 25 years.  for the past 5, we've been using on-line.  I have asked and commented REPEATEDLY that i need to have a cost column while creating estimates.

It is absolutely essential that I can see my items cost, Mark Up,  Sale Price.  This allows me to adjust my pricing without getting hurt.   Today was the straw that broke the camels back.  I lost a $126,000.00 sale because I accidentally quoted too high as a result of not having this feature.  The impact on my bottom line due to the lost deal/profit is unforgivable.  I'm livid!   I read these posts and answers to them and you just keep pretending like you don't understand what we are asking for and repeatedly offer non-solutions to what is a very frustrating issue.  Why couldn't you simply state that the feature we are looking for is currently only available on the Desktop version and save us all a lot of headache, frustration and lost revenue?   Shame on you.  and by the way, we have been asking for this since the roll out of QBO.

Markups on an Estimates is a valuable tool for making sure small business owners are making a minimum profit on the products and services they provide. The ability to add markups to products and services is important to make sure the overall project makes a profit. It is available in the desktop version and it needs to be added to the online version too. Markups allows owners to play with different aspects of base costs to be competitive. It turns many users away from the online version. I implore QBO to add the markup function to estimates.

I have submitted multiple feedback responses to fix this issue and nothing has been addressed. We NEED this added to estimates/invoices ASAP. Not offering it is affecting our business' ability to fully transition our three LLCs to the online version. GET THIS FIXED PLEASE.

You would use Quickbooks online advanced for this.

I have sent a Feed back note to Quickbooks. But, feel compelled to leave an message in the quickbooks community.

My company just upgraded to quickbooks online. Our business functions on a Mark Up from our costs, which is a  basic business concept and was part of quickbooks Desktop.

Is it 100% true that QuickBooks  Online Advanced has Mark Up? I've read and researched different reivews and facts about Advanced having mark up for Estimates.

If not, Please, Quickbooks, add "Mark Up" to your Estimate forms. What might be all the ways you (Quickbooks Developers) can add Mark Up to your Estimate forms just like it was done in Quickbooks Desktop?

I appreciate you for sending feedback, Dan.

The markup feature is a valuable functionality that is currently unavailable in the QuickBooks Online Advanced version. We do not have a specific timeline for when this feature will be added to the online versions.

In the meantime, you'll want to consider using a third-party application. I suggest visiting our QuickBooks App Store page to find the app that suits your needs. Let me show you how:

  1. Head to the QuickBooks App Store.
  2. From the search box, enter any keyword.
  3. Then, press the Enter key on your keyboard.
  4. You can also use the Categories section.

Also, sending a lot of feedback helps the developers and product teams to understand how users are experiencing the software. It provides valuable insights into what can be improved. Sharing your ideas helps in continuous enhancements and updates to make the program more user-friendly and efficient.

Additionally, I've added these resources that'll help you set up, do things efficiently, and keep your books running smoothly in QuickBooks Online:

You can get back on this thread to stay informed if there are any updates regarding the availability of the option. If you have any other questions about setting up your books or the program's features, please don't hesitate to keep us posted.
