Hi @arkvalleyinfo,

Thanks for posting in the Community. I'm here to assist you with changing the Chart of Accounts type.

You can modify the Account Type with the following steps:

  1. Select Accounting on the left navigation menu and Chart of Accounts.
  2. Click the triangle in the Action column next to the account that you'd like to change and choose Edit.
  3. Select the Account Type and Detail Type that you'd like.
  4. Click Save and Close.
  5. Choose Yes to the prompt that appears.

The following is a brief video of this process:

For additional information on editing the Chart of Accounts, such as customizing Account Details, I suggest the following article: Edit Your Chart of Accounts

That's got it. I believe you will have it changed in a few clicks.

Let me know if you need anything else. Wishing you a great weekend ahead.

The account type on the top is not highlighted and will not allow me to change it, how do I make a chart of account a COGS instead of an expense?

Welcome to the Community, @SEL5. I'm here to share details on changing your account type to expense in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

When trying to change the account type, did you happen to encounter any error messages or prompts?

Upon trying here on my end, changing the account type is possible. The only thing that won't let you change the account type is when there's a sub-account included in the account.

If the account doesn't have a sub-account, we may need to troubleshoot your browser for this unusual behavior. To begin, open an incognito or private browser window. You can use the following keyboard shortcuts for the most popular browsers:

  • Google Chrome: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Microsoft Edge: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Safari: Command + Shift + N

Once you have opened the browser window, log in to your QuickBooks account and try to change the account type again. If it works, proceed to clear your browser's cache. This process removes and fixes specific issues and helps the program run flawlessly. Additionally, you can use other devices and supported browsers to ensure everything works as expected.

Additionally, you can refer to this article to record, edit, and delete expenses in the program: Enter and manage expenses in QuickBooks Online.

Let me know if you need further assistance with your chart of accounts. I'll be here to assist. Have a great day!
