Question

How do I turn on the option to track expenses by donor? When I click on "account settings" I only see expenditures, not expenses.

Welcome to Community, lawrence. I'm here to make sure you'll be able to turn on Track expenses and items by donor in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

It is possible that your company is a nonprofit organization, which uses the term expenditures instead of expenses for tracking purposes. I suggest contacting your accountant to verify the organization type you have.

Once you have confirmed, you can proceed to update the tax form industry of your company to reflect expenses in the overview tab.

 Here's how:

  1. Go to the Gear icon and select Account and Settings.
  2. Under the company type section, click on the Pencil icon.
  3. Use the dropdown button to select and change the tax form industry.
  4. Once done, click Save.

Then, you can proceed to modify the label customer to donors within the Other Preferences section.

  1. Go to the Gear icon and select Account and Settings.
  2. Navigate to the Advanced tab.
  3. Click on Edit in the Other Preferences section.
  4. Choose the dropdown menu for the Customer label.
  5. Select Donors from the available options.

6. Click on Save and then Done to save your changes.

Once everything is good. You now have the option to turn on track expenses and items by donor. I've added screenshots for your reference.
