I would like to add numbers to line items.  This would make it easier when discussing with customers.  If I could say line item number rather than the X rows down.

Welcome to the Community space, @eastex. Let's team up to help you add line-item numbers to your transactions inside QuickBooks Online (QBO).

As we read through your post, you can get through this by using the SKU field and adding it as one of the columns inside your transaction where you can enter the item numbers. But before doing that, you'll want to ensure that you enter the SKU code in your Item or inventory information. We'll write down the steps below to get you going:

  1. Access your QuickBooks Online company.
  2. On the left navigational bar, go to the Sales tab.
  3. Select Product & Services.
  4. Locate the product and then in the Action column, click Edit.
  5. In the SKU field, enter the item number or code.
  6. Once done, click the Save and close button.

After adding the item number or code to your inventory item, you'll want to edit the template you used for your transactions. Please see this page for more details: Customize invoices, estimates, and sales receipts in QuickBooks Online.

If you wish to change the SKU field to the Item number field, know you can edit and change the name when editing the transaction template. However, if you're referring to something else, feel free to add more details below so we can provide the necessary steps to get through this.
