An invoice is a final sale and you should not be adding to it, but if you must, just use the next line

You can add new line items to existing invoices by going to their records, then editing them.

Here's how:

  1. In your left navigation bar, go to Sales, then Invoices.
  2. Find and click the one you need to edit.
  3. Hit Edit invoice.
  4. Select Add lines.

I've additionally included a detailed resource about working with invoices that may come in handy moving forward: Create invoices

I am using Quickbooks Online and it did not have an button to add lines.  I need to insert lines above prior entries.  How may I do it?

I'm here to ensure you can add new line items to your invoices in QuickBooks Online (QBO), @guessfirm

To insert a line from your prior items, you need to click on the section where you want to insert the additional line. From there, you'll see the green plus (+) button to insert a row above. Hovering over the 9-dot square only rearranges the lines if you need to. See the screenshot below for a visual process.

Moreover, if you're unable to do the process above and don't have the Add lines button below, your browser might be causing the issue. With this, I recommend signing into your QuickBooks Online account through a private or incognito window. This approach ensures that QBO pages fetch current information from Intuit's server, avoiding any dependency on potentially flawed, outdated, or corrupted cached data. You can use these keyboard shortcuts to save time:

  • Safari: Command + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: CTRL + Shift + P
  • Google Chrome: CTRL + Shift + N
  • Microsoft Edge: CTRL + Shift + N

After signing in, please go to the invoice page and see if you can already add lines to it. If it works, go back to your regular browser and clear its cache. If not, consider using a different browser to determine if the problem is specific to the one you are currently using.
