Question

How do you keep inactive accounts from counting towards your chart of account entry limit?

I reached my 250 entry limit for the chart of accounts. I read the article on how to reduce usage, and I made some of the accounts inactive (as the article explained).   I am trying to input new entries, but it still says I am at my 250 limit.

Hello there, heather.

I can see the importance of fixing this concern. I'll be sure to provide you with some updates about the usage limit of accounts in the Chart of Accounts so you can get back to business in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

QBO has revised usage limits to better match the capabilities of our products. Starting in April 2019 and rolling out over the year, the revised usage limits will apply to all QuickBooks Online Simple Start, Essentials, and Plus users. You can't add a new entry or account if you're reducing an entry while over the limit due to thresholds. You'll need to clean your books while it's still not on their limit so you can add more entries.

See this article for more details about the usage limits by subscription in QuickBooks: Learn about usage limits in QuickBooks Online.

You'll want to upgrade your subscription to Advanced if they need to add unlimited accounts to your books.

Once you upgrade your subscription, you can successfully add an account to your chart of accounts in QuickBooks.

In case you're ready to reconcile accounts in QuickBooks so they always match your bank and credit card statements, you can check this article for guidance:
