Question

I am inputting contractor info into my contractors tab. I fill out their EIN info myself. I want to prepare the 1099 forms but when I go to generate it, it doesn't work.

We're delighted to have you here in the Community space. We'll provide information to help you get through this to generate 1099 forms inside QuickBooks Online (QBO).

Before anything else, we would like to know if you encountered any error messages when you generated the forms. If not, we can perform basic browser troubleshooting to ensure this has nothing to do with your browser. Temporary internet files can improve the browsing speed, but it can sometimes affect your experience when using the program.

To start, access your company file using an incognito or private browser. Feel free to use these shortcut keys:

  • Chrome: Ctrl+Shift+N
  • Firefox: Ctrl+Shift+P
  • Safari: Command+Shift+N

Once you're ready, sign into your company and try to generate the 1099 forms. If you're able to generate and print the forms, proceed to clear your cache. For further information, refer to this article for the steps: Clear cache and cookies to fix issues when using QuickBooks Online.

If the 1099 forms don't show, you'll want to check for possible errors and ensure that the contractor's information is accurate. Also, if you plan to file these forms, please know that filing a 1099 through QBO is currently available. You can print a copy for reference and manually file through the IRS. For more details, please see this page: https://www.irs.gov/instructions/i1099mec.

A workaround if you can't print the forms is to use 1099 reports as a reference when you fill out and file 1099 forms. For more details, please see this page: Create 1099 reports in QuickBooks.
