I want to have a product that categorizes both business and personal expenses.  I want to have as many categories for personal expenses as I do my business ones.  How can I make that happen?

Thanks for getting in touch, @calabiso. I'm here to assist you in setting up a comprehensive categorization system for personal expenses in QuickBooks Online.

First, we'll identify the categories relevant to your expenses. Then, we'll set up a main personal expense account with subcategories to help you track your expenses effectively and analyze your spending habits for better financial control.

Here's a step-by-step guide:

  1. Log in to QuickBooks Online.
  2. Go to the Accounting menu.
  3. Select Chart of Accounts.
  4. Click on New to create a new account.
  5. Choose the appropriate account type.
  6. Fill in the category name and details, then save.
  7. Repeat for each category you want to add.

Once done, create subcategories.

  1. Go back to the Chart of Accounts.
  2. Click on the New button again.
  3. Select Expense as the account type.
  4. Name your subcategory (e.g.Groceries).
  5. In the Sub-account of section, check the box next to your main personal expense account (e.g., Personal Expenses).
  6. Fill in any additional details and click Save and Close.

It's important to keep personal and business expenses distinct to avoid complications during tax season and to maintain accurate financial records. If you're uncertain about categorizing certain transactions or mixed-use expenses, it's best to consult an accountant for tailored guidance.
