Question

In Budget View/Edit, what are the "Add subdivided budget for" and "View budget for" dropdown boxes for? Does a parent Class include its subClasses?

Hello there, houstonwb-elswor.

Let me share details about creating a subdivided budget for classes in QuickBooks Online.

The Add subdivided budget for dropdown allows you to select multiple classes you can edit or view, while the View budget for lets you work on the amounts for a specific class. Also, QuickBooks won't automatically include subclasses when making a budget for a parent class alone.

In your case, you can verify if you've created a budget for a parent class and accidentally entered an amount for the subclasses that can double the amount when running a report. Here's how:

  1. Head to the Gear icon, then Budgeting.
  2. Click View/Edit on the Actions dropdown.
  3. In the Add subdivided budget for, select the parent class and the subclasses.
  4. In the View budget for dropdown, choose the parent class and review if you've entered the correct amount. Then, select a subclass and clear the amount if you only want to create a budget for the parent class.
  5. You can repeat the process of reviewing the budget for each subclass and ensure to choose Save after clearing its amount.
  6. Once done, you can exit the page by clicking the button or selecting Save and close.
