New QBO user - Chart of Accounts

How can I set up a new client with only the bare minimum Chart of Accounts?

I would like to set up the Chart of Accounts for my clients - it takes way too long to merge unnecessary accounts.

"Making Inactive" doesn't work either because Quickbooks puts SO MANY subaccounts.

Hello there, Bravura.

I'm here to provide valuable information about how the Chart of Accounts functions in QuickBooks Online.

In QuickBooks Online, the Chart of Accounts has default accounts to help organize your financial data based on your business type. These default accounts track income, expenses, assets, liabilities, and equity, making it easier to manage your company's finances.

For now, the only course of action is to merge or deactivate the accounts as a temporary fix.

this is ridiculous!  I should be able to set up my own chart of accounts (like I can do on desktop version) and not have to mess with chart of accounts that qb online has set up

My colleague above is correct about the application's way of creating accounts for new clients in QuickBooks Online (QBO), tomy.

QBO is a cloud-based application with features distinguished from QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT). I acknowledge your idea about setting up accounts in the Chart of Accounts (COA). For now, we can only make the accounts inactive to create or display minimal accounts. I'll show you how:

  1. Go to the Gear icon and select Chart of Accounts.
  2. Locate the account you want to delete.
  3. Click the Action ▼ dropdown and hit Make inactive.

You'll also want to consider checking out this article to know more before making an account inactive: Make an account inactive on your chart of accounts in QuickBooks Online.

Moreover, I recommend sending this suggestion to our product development team. Our product developers are responsible for evaluating and implementing new enhancements, so they would be better equipped to determine the feasibility and benefits of your suggestion for our users:

  1. Go to the Gear icon.
  2. Select Feedback.
  3. Enter a brief description of your product suggestion.
  4. Click Next to submit feedback.

Furthermore, you can refer to these articles that will help you with categorizing your transactions, and reconcile them to ensure your books are balanced:
