I have less than 10 1099s so I am printing my 1099s from QBO; however, QBO no longer has the option to print the 1096 form in 2024  What happened?

I see the importance of printing Form 1096 as you file your 1099s in the IRS, EFM2

Printing and filling out your Form 1096 is unavailable in QuickBooks Online (QBO) and QuickBooks Contractor Payments since QBO doesn't provide Form 1096 complying with IRS guidelines. Thus, you'll have to print this form outside QBO. You may reach out to the IRS to get this form or manually download the Form 1096 from their site and include the summarized information from the 1099 form.

In addition, if you e-filed your 1099 you can print it by following these steps:

  1. Go to the Taxes menu located in your left-hand menu.
  2. Choose 1099 filings
  3. Click View 1099 for you to see the PDF copy.

Why would QBO stop allowing small businesses with less than 10 1099 forms to submit, not to be able to print the 1096 which is required to accompany the 1099 copy As to the IRS?

Hi there, @NancyC.

I understand your concern about the absence of the option to print Form 1096 in QuickBooks Online. Let me provide some information about this.

If you're filing electronically, the IRS doesn't require Form 1096. However, if you're filing manually, you'll need to fill out the 1096 form and mail it along with the 1099s. You can find more details by clicking the View summary button. Once completed, you can attach it to the 1099 copy and submit it to the IRS.

For additional information on printing your tax forms, you can refer to this article for detailed steps: Print your 1099 and 1096 forms.

Last Monday, January 22, I got an email from Christopher at Quick Books Online Support team asking me if my issue had been resolved and it not, to reply to the email with a date, time and phone number for Online Support Team to contact me.  I replied immediately with all the information and to contact me on Tuesday, January 23rd.  I never got a call from QBO Support and I never got a response to the email.  I have followed up with the email daily sending a reply to QBO Support.

This is another good reason to stay with Quickbooks Desktop.   I have one very small customer on QBO and I absolutely dislike working with the interface.   Now I have to hand print a 1096?

This company has one US person living overseas who needs a 1099, so this 1099 must be printed and mailed as QBO doesn't allow for non-US addresses.

How can this system be so inflexible, and on top of that force people to hand write a 1096?

Quickbooks, get it together with your on line format.  Those of us who actually know what we are doing would like to have the desktop version on the on line.  Better bookkeeping and easier access to information.  And better pricing.

To everyone here that wants to print out their 1096, I just created a 1096 template through Photoshop that is pretty close to what we had when QBO allowed us to print. You'll need Photoshop to use this, of course, and this only accounts for name, address, contact name, phone number, email, EIN, total number of forms, and total amount reported. It will check off the 1099-NEC box.

Paying it forward to those who are frustrated like myself that we couldn't print this out. Please share with your friends who might have the same problem.

Thank you so much for providing this! It was a huge help! I had to redo it a little so it worked with my fonts & printer, but I had 3 forms and only needed 1, so I was fine to fix it and do it again.

I agree this horrible what Intuit has done not allowing the customer to choose E-file or print/mail with the 1096 forms.  I have been waiting customer services to tell me where do you print you 1096.  The service is all artificial intelligence and it shows how poor and unprofessional Intuit.

This is endlessly frustrating, WHY DID QUICKBOOKS REMOVE THE ABILITY TO PRINT 1096 FORMS
