Question

QB2021 desktop - can no longer see the detail in reports by clicking on it

I used Quickbooks 2016 Desktop until recently. When I would run a financial report, I could click on one of the line items, and QB would present the detail behind it. For example, in a P&L report, if I clicked on Sales, I could see a list of the customer deposits that made up the Sales.

I finally purchased QB 2021 Desktop this year. However, the new version doesn't seem to have this very convenient feature, or I can't figure how to use it if is still available. Thank you for your help.

Hello there, sbsaadwu. Hope you're doing well today.

Regardless of the version, there isn't an update or changes on how QuickBooks works on the common financial reports. QuickBooks Desktop 2021 works the same way you used QuickBooks Desktop 2016 when it comes to reports.

What we can do is to make sure you've selected the accounting method. Then, click on the amount to view the associated transactions and the lists of your customer deposits. You can check these articles for additional information when doing a task in the program:

Thank you for the fast response. What do you mean by selecting the accounting method? I don't see that as an option. When I tried to click on the links you provided, there was nothing there.

Hi there, sbsaadwu.

I'm here to share some updates about the QuickZoom feature.

The accounting method is also known as the report basis (cash and accrual) in QuickBooks. This option is used to analyze your business from different angles in the same report. You can find the Cash/Accrual radio buttons below the Dates menu.

Moreover, please know that the QuickZoom feature is still available in the 2021 version. Instead of clicking the category or account, you'll have to double-click the total amount to view the list of transactions comprising that particular amount. Follow these three simple steps to be guided in using it:

  1. Open your financial report.
  2. Position the mouse pointer over the total amount of item you want to view. When you hover over the amount, the cursor changes to a magnifying glass with a "Z" inside it.
  3. Double-click the amount to view the transactions list.

QB2020 suddenly not displaying the detail in reports

July 14, 2023

We appreciate you joining the thread, @Lapidskorner.

You can perform the Verify and Rebuild feature inside QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT). This way, the program can run a self-check inside its system to determine the root cause of the problem and start fixing it by rebuilding the data. We'll write down the steps below to get you going:

  1. Go to Window then select Close All.
  2. Go to File, then select Utilities.
  3. Select Verify Data. If you see:
  4. QuickBooks detected no problems with your data—your data is clean, and you don’t need to do anything else.
  5. An error message—search for it on our QuickBooks Desktop support site for how to fix it.
  6. Your data has lost integrity—Data damage was found in the file. Rebuild your data to fix

Refer to this page for more detail: Verify and Rebuild Data in QuickBooks Desktop.

@Lapidskorner , thanks for volunteering your wisdom for further problems.  Ultimately, it seems when I hover of the line item, it doesn't turn into that magnifying glass and i can't double click it.  I can right click it but the interface to drill down into the details isn't there.  I've tried the Verify Data thing... It came back noting that there were no problems.  Any idea how to fix it?

Thanks!

Hello there.

I'll help you perform troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue of being unable to see the magnifying glass when hovering the mouse into the numbers.

You can first check the display settings of your computer. Refer to this article for the troubleshooting steps for screen issues: Fix screen issues in QuickBooks Desktop.

If the issue persists, I recommend you download QuickBooks Tool Hub.

Here's how:

  1. Close QuickBooks.
  2. Download the most recent version (1.5.0.0) of the QuickBooks Tool Hub. Then, you can save the file somewhere you can easily find it (like your Downloads folder or your Windows desktop). Note: If you've installed Tool Hub before, you can find out which version you have. Select the Home tab. The version will be on the bottom.
  3. Open the file you downloaded (QuickBooksToolHub.exe).
  4. Follow the on-screen steps to install and agree to the terms and conditions.
  5. Once done with the installation, double-click the icon on your Windows desktop to open the tool hub.

Once done, proceed with running Quick fix my program. Here are the steps:

  1. In the QuickBooks Tool Hub, select Program Problems.
  2. Select Quick Fix my Program.
  3. Start QuickBooks Desktop and open your data file.

I'm also adding this article to help you customize a report in QuickBooks Desktop: Customize reports in QuickBooks Desktop.

Don't hesitate to comment below if you have questions about the system performance of QuickBooks Desktop. I'm always here to help. Have a great day.

Very Frustrating that the QB Team responses don't even check to see if they have fixed the issue that everyone...  over and over ... has identified as the problem.  The smartest guy in this chat was Smoore33 and first to identify the problem.  Stop telling people to download the toolbox that hasn't been updated for 15 months and fix the 'code that tracks the monitor position' for the Y dimension.  That. Is. The. Problem.

Just fix it.

To fix this go to view at the top menu bar and select multi-monitor-mode.
