Reorganising categories and transactions

Hi there,

 

I've recently taken on managing Quickbooks for my small organisation and need to reorganise some categories in the chart of accounts to better reflect our budget lines, as well as migrate some transactions from one category to another. So I've got a couple of questions:

 

Is there a way to batch migrate transactions from one category to another?

 

If a sub-category is moved to sit under a different parent category, will existing transactions be automatically be recategorised as well?

Thanks for taking the time to reach out to the QuickBooks Community. I hope you're having a great day so far. 

 

With QuickBooks Online, you can bulk categorize your expenses and bank transactions. I'm including some steps to walk you through the process below.

 

For expense transactions:

 

  1. Select Expenses from the sidebar menu.
  2. Tick the checkboxes of the transactions you'd like to categorize.
  3. Click the Batch Actions drop-down list, then select Categorize selected.
  4. Choose the appropriate category, then hit Apply.

For online banking transactions:

 

  1. Select Banking or Transactions from the sidebar menu.
  2. Go to the Banking tab and choose the appropriate bank account.
  3. Select the For Review tab, then tick the checkboxes of the transactions you'd like to categorize.
  4. Click the Update button, then select the correct category from the drop-down menu.
  5. When you're done, hit Apply or Apply and accept.

 

I hope these steps help you along the way. As for your question about the sub-category being moved under a new parent category, no, existing transactions will not be automatically categorized when a sub-category is moved to a different parent category in QuickBooks Online.
