Question

Sales Tax Liability

I removed shipping address on an invoice that has been paid and for some reason when I run the Sales tax liability report it's showing up as non- taxable. When I click on the invoice I don't see anything that is exempt. I've checked the clients profile and they should be getting charged tax. I noticed this happened when I updated two different clients inovices. Please help.

When creating an invoice in QuickBooks Online (QBO), sales tax is automatically computed based on your established sales tax settings, your customer's tax profile, and the chosen shipping location. Let me elaborate on this, Evergreen.

QBO is configured to calculate sales tax automatically using the information you input. However, discrepancies in the resulting tax amount can occur due to issues such as rounding errors, updates in tax rates, or particular conditions within your business that may require you to manually adjust the tax calculations.

For more information, feel free to scan this article: Learn how QuickBooks Online calculates sales tax.

Regarding your concern, is the shipping address the same as the address where the products are being sold? If the addresses differ, the sales location might be situated in a region that does not mandate the collection of sales tax.  As a result, this discrepancy could be the reason why the transaction appears as non-taxable on the Sales Tax Liability report.

Additionally, you may consider creating a test invoice for the same customer but without including a shipping address to see if it is marked as non-taxable.  If the sales location still appears non-taxable, then no sales tax is necessary. However, if it appears taxable, there may be an issue with the original invoice. In such a case, you can delete and recreate the invoice.
