Subaccount not showing up on P&L statement

We just switched from Desktop to QBO and are seeing something quirky as part of the migration. We have a subaccount Stipend under Payroll Expense. In the CoA the relationship between the accounts in fine. When we look at transactions we notice that everything is showing up in the proper hierarchy (Account -> SubAccount -> SubAccount)... BUT when we run the P&L this specific subaccount, Stipend, won't report under the it's parent category. 

 

We have other Sub-accounts in the system too, and those are all reporting fine.

 

So wondering what is going on with this specific subaccount? Is this some quirk of migration? As we missing something? Any ideas on how to investigate or resolve would be helpful!

Let's investigate the reason behind the sub-account not appearing on the Profit and Loss report and work towards ensuring its visibility in the report, sakar.

 

If there are transactions recorded for the sub-account (Stipend account), it should be included in the Profit and Loss report.

 

Let's start running a quick report for the Stipend account by going to the Chart of Accounts (COA). By doing so, we will be able to thoroughly examine and confirm whether there are any existing transactions associated with this account after the conversion of your data from QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) to QuickBooks Online (QBO). Here are the steps to follow:

 

  1. Go to the Accounting menu.
  2. Locate the Stipend account using the search bar.
  3. Under the Action column, click Run report.
  4. Make sure the reporting date is correctly set up and include all the necessary details.
  5. Hit Run report to reflect the changes.

 

Once we have confirmed that there are transactions linked to the sub-account in QuickBooks Online (QBO), let's pull up the Profit and Loss report again.

 

In doing so, we need to ensure that the date range is accurately configured, and we can customize the report to display transactions based on their respective transaction dates. Feel free to utilize this article for tips about customizing and filtering the report. If you still get the same result, let's isolate it by logging in to a private browser or using other supported web browsers. If you see the Stipend account using an incognito window, you can clear your browser cache to fix odd behavior.

 

To isolate the issue, please try accessing QuickBooks Online (QBO) through a private browsing session or utilize a different supported web browser. By doing so, you can determine if the Stipend account is visible when using an incognito window. Follow these shortcut keys when accessing a private browser:

 

  • Google Chrome: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Safari: Command + Shift + N

 

If you can view the Stipend account in an incognito window, you may need to clear your browser cache to resolve any unusual behavior.

 

On the other hand, If there are no transactions associated to the sub-account,  you have the option to manually create the necessary transactions or consider re-importing the missing data to ensure the sub-account is properly populated.

Thanks for the comment. 

 

1. Transactions are attached to the Stipend subaccount and can be seen from the "view report" in the CoA. 

2. The Stipend account does show up on the P&L. Perhaps my original comment was not clear about this. We do see the Stipend account and its sub-subaccounts as well. 

3. HOWEVER, the Stipend account is not showing up under the Payroll Expense account, which is its parent. When looking at the CoA view report for e.g., its very clear that the Stipend For Person X is in the chain Payroll Expense - Stipends - Person X Stipend. BUT when we run the P&L, the Stipend shows up as a *standalone* account rather than under Payroll Expense.
