Welcome back to the Community, @cannonpointechir.
I appreciate you checking other posts to look for a solution about this. I'm here to help walk you through pulling up a report that'll show the total payments your customer made this year on QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) Pro 2016.
You can pull up the Sales by Customer Detail report and use the customize option to filter the date and the specific customer that is asking for the total payment. Here's how:
1. Go to the Reports menu at the top, then pick Sales on the drop-down.
2. Choose the Sales by Customer Detail to get the report.
3. Select the Customize Report on the upper left, then go to the Display tab.
4. Click the Dates drop-down, then choose This Fiscal year.
5. Now go to Filters tab, then enter Name on the Search bar.
6. On the Name drop-down, select the specific customer, then OK.
I also attached some sample screenshots below for your visual guide.

Once done, you can send this report to your customer by clicking the Email option at the top, then choose how you want to send it.

For future reference, you may check out this article for further guidance: Customize customer, job, and sales reports.
That should do it! Please let me know how it goes or if I can be of additional assistance. I'd be glad to answer if you have any follow-up concerns. Wishing you and your business continued success.
