Transferring jobs on QB desktop to Online

Hi I'm currently setting up QB online as desktop is ceasing. I allocate a job number for every order and all related costings and invoices are posted against the relevant job.

I can then look at each job, or a summary, to identify profitability.

When I switch to QB Online, will all these jobs be automatically be identified as 'Projects' (the new name for 'Jobs')? Or do I lose this data

No. You have to migrate data from Job to Project manually. I would recommend to  keep using QB Desktop at this time and upgrade to QBD 2023 if required.

Thanks for bringing up your question about transferring your job-related data from QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) to QuickBooks Online (QBO), Ian Bunch. I understand the importance of maintaining your job numbers and associated data for tracking profitability. Allow me to clarify the process for you.

In QBO, the concept of "Jobs" has been replaced with "Projects." When you transition from QBDT o QBO, your existing job-related data will indeed be migrated as projects, and you won't lose this valuable information. The job numbers you've been using in QBDT will carry over and be recognized as projects. All the related costings, invoices, and other associated data will also be preserved and linked to the respective projects.

You'll be able to continue analyzing the profitability of your projects just as you have been doing with jobs in QB Desktop. The transition process is designed to ensure that your data remains intact and accessible in the new online environment.

Moreover, while the terminology has changed from "Jobs" to "Projects," the core functionality and purpose remain the same. To help you efficiently manage and track your business activities and their financial impact.

Furthermore, you might find these guides helpful for instructions on importing your data into QBO and understanding the types of transactions you can migrate:

If you have any specific concerns or questions about the migration process or the use of projects in QB Online, feel free to let me know. I'm here to assist you throughout this transition and ensure your experience is as smooth as possible.
