Question

Trying to record my sales tax payment. I do not see the button called "Start Return" any where, or any other way to record the payment. Any suggestions or pointers?

Thanks for checking in with us, denall901.

I can help you record sales tax payment in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

From the Sales Tax Center, make sure the dates is set up for Previous Year so you can record a tax payment. I'll guide you through the steps below:

  1. From the left menu, select Taxes.
  2. Select the tax agency you're recording the payment for in the Sales Tax Owed list.
  3. Click the drop down arrow and choose Previous Year.
  4. Choose Record Tax Payment at the bottom of the list.
  5. Enter the necessary information.
  6. If you don't need to print the sales tax check, select Record Tax Payment.
  7. If you need to print a check for the payment, check "Print a Check"and choose Record Payment and Print Check.

You can check this article for a detailed information and steps how to do this: Record Sales Tax Payment.

That will do it. Let me know if there's anything else I can help you in recording sales tax payment in QBO. I'm always here to help you out.

I'm also having a similar problem, "Select the tax agency you're recording the payment for in the Sales Tax Owed list." doesn't seem to exist. There's no list.

I'm trying to record a sales tax payment too. I can't even find the "sales tax center" and when I go to the "Taxes" item in the left list, there is no option like what you mention.  I was on chat for hours and then disconnected and never got a call back. I'm more than frustrated at this point.

Let's get this sales taxes paid, mlhiland.

The steps provided by Charies_M are for users who have the old interface of the Sales Tax Center.

With the Automated Sales Tax, there are a few steps to take for you to file your sales tax return and record your tax payments.

  1. Review what you owe
  2. Decide how you want to file
  3. File and pay your return
  4. Check your filing status

The detailed instructions for every steps are included in this article:

File and pay your sales tax return in QuickBooks Online.

Under the Step 3: File and pay your return section, you'll see how you can e-file your returns and pay the sales tax. Filing your return and recording the payments manually are available, too.

I am attempting to record sales tax payments from 2019, however in the sales tax center it will only allow me to go back to August, 2019. The liabilities were created on the sales receipts for the entire year, but I am unable to record the payments for Jan - Jul. Does anyone know how to solve this?
