Question

Wages Show Under "Not Specified" in P&L by Property

Hey QB!

I'm creating this new post to follow up on a critical wage allocation issue that I first reported back in September 2024 regarding timesheet data not flowing correctly into our Profit & Loss reports.

Quick Recap of the Original Problem:

  • We use QB Time and Payroll Elite to meticulously track employee time using the Property, Class (for Departments), and Customer fields on our Workforce timesheets.

  • Initially, none of the data from these fields was reflected in our financial reports (P&L by Property, P&L by Class, P&L by Customer). All wage expenses were frustratingly lumped under the "Not Specified” column.

  • This required time-consuming journal entries to record wages into these fields, which is necessary for us to make informed business decisions based on property, department, or customer profitability.

  • After back-and-forth with QB Support on my previous post, the guidance was that this functionality wasn't available (single class tracking only), and I submitted a feature request (September 2024) detailing the need, including a scenario like an employee splitting time between different properties, departments (classes), and customers within a single shift.

Positive Progress — Thank You!

Sometime between my feature request and early 2025, QBO partially addressed this! We were so thrilled to see that wage expenses are now correctly allocating based on timesheet data in the Profit and Loss by Class and Profit and Loss by Customer reports. This is a significant improvement, and we appreciate the development team implementing these fixes.

The Remaining Issue: P&L by Property Still Not Working

Despite the progress, the Profit and Loss by Property report still does not pull the wage data from the Property field entered on employee timesheets. Just like the original problem, all wage expenses continue to appear under the "Not Specified" column in this specific report.

  • To be clear: Our team is entering the correct Property information on their timesheets alongside the Class and Customer data (which are now working correctly).

  • This missing link means we still cannot accurately analyze profitability at the property level directly from QBO reports without manual intervention. This is a critical function for our business.

Our Requests:

  1. 1. Fix P&L by Property Allocation: Please investigate why the Property field data from timesheets isn't flowing through to the P&L by Property report and implement a fix, mirroring the functionality now present for Class and Customer. This seems like the final piece missing from the original request.
  2. 2. Retroactive Data Population: As requested previously, can QBO retroactively apply these allocation rules (for Class, Customer, and Property once fixed) to our historical financials? Our timesheets for prior periods already contain the necessary Property, Class, and Customer details. It would save us an enormous amount of manual work if QBO could push this existing data into the historical P&L reports, correcting the "Not Specified" entries for those past periods.
  3.

Getting this wage allocation fully functional across all three dimensions (Property, Class, Customer) based directly on timesheet entries is so critical for basic reporting and analysis. We've been pursuing this fix for a long time and are hopeful this final piece can be resolved soon. Thanks for your consideration!

I appreciate your follow-up regarding the wage allocation and sharing your positive feedback about the recent improvements, RyderW.

It's good to hear that the allocation of wage expenses based on timesheet data is now reflecting correctly in the Profit and Loss by Class and Profit and Loss by Customer reports.

Regarding the remaining issue with the Profit and Loss by Property report, I understand how critical it is for your business to have accurate profitability analysis at the property level.

To have the wage data show in the report and track them separately, you can submit another request so our Product Developers team can review and work towards implementing a fix similar to what has been done for the Class and Customer data. You can follow the steps below for the process:

  1. Open your QuickBooks account.
  2. Go to the Gear icon at the top, then select Feedback.
  3. Type in your request.
  4. Click Next to submit feedback.

While waiting for your request, you can stay up-to-date with the latest news about new features by reviewing Intuit's Product Updates webpage.

Regarding your second concern, QuickBooks doesn't support retroactive updates to wage data for periods before the implementation of the recent improvements. The updates are designed to streamline and improve data accuracy for all future wage transactions and records.

Moreover, you can refer to these articles to keep track of your wage transactions and other company information:

In case there's information you want to add to your report that is not available within QuickBooks, you can also export it to Excel. From there, you can personalize your data further manually.
