Question

When vendors give you a discount for paying early, how do you enter that? I used to do it all the time in desktop, but can't figure it out here.

I am paying bills and need to take my vendor discounts.  I don't see where I need to account for that.

Welcome to the Community forum, @kerstins-sio-mid.

I'll show you how to enter the discount given by your vendor in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

First, off create a discount category under the Income account. After that, create a check for that vendor and apply the discount there.

Here's how to create an income account for the discount:

  1. Move your mouse to the Transactions tab and select Chart of accounts.
  2. Click the  New icon in the upper right corner.
  3. Enter the Account name. Ensure that the name will help you identify that it's for the discount given by the vendor, or you can ask your accountant for it. Choose Income in the Account type and Detail type.
  4. When finished, tap Save.

Once done, create a check for the vendor's transaction and apply the discount using the account created. Follow these steps:

  1. Click the + New icon and pick the Check below the Vendors column.
  2. Select the vendor in the Payee field.
  3. In the first line of Category details, pick the item or service you have or will purchase from the vendor and the exact amount.
  4. In the second line item, select the income account created. Then, enter how much discount the vendor gives and put a minus sign beside it, for example: (-$2,000.00).
  5. After that, click Save and close.
