Recently the date field disappeared on my invoice line items regardless of the template used, even the default.  Tried a bunch of things, still missing.  Help!

Were you ever able to get this fixed? I am experiencing the exact same issue.

Yes, I figured it out after a lot of trial and error.  Turned out that I was using "old" templates and every time I created a new invoice it defaulted to the old style template and the date column was missing.  Once I changed the default to the "new" or "modern" template, voila, the date column showed up.  I'm not real happy with the look of the new template, but that's for another day.  At least now I can get dates to show up... I appreciate what you've done so far, @pno2nr. Let me share some information on how to get the date field in your invoice.

To begin with, please ensure to turn on the service date feature in the accounts and settings.

Here's how:

  1. Click the Gear icon, then select Accounts and Settings
  2. Navigate to Sales and then locate Sales form content
  3. Click the Pencil, then toggle the Service Date
  4. Once turned to green, click Done

After this, go to Custom Form Styles, then ensure that the date is included in the template.

Here's how:

  1. Go to Custom Form Styles, click New Style, and choose Invoice.
  2. You can select any template, then go to Content.
  3. Click the body, then toggle the Date.

Once done, you can now create an invoice with a service date or date field.

Rogelio, I tried all the things you suggested, but the date column is still missing on all invoices, regardless of the template used.  Both for data entry and for printing.  I tried changing browsers from Firefox to Chrome and results were the same, no date field.  I'm stumped... any advice appreciated!  Thanks... I can see that you did everything you could to show the missing service date, @pno2nr. I'm here to provide additional troubleshooting steps to help you get back to working order.

To start, may I know the QuickBooks Online (QBO) version you're using? Also, do you experience this when using a new invoice layout? I appreciate you providing additional details about this so I can further check what causes the issue.

In the meantime, you can perform these troubleshooting steps to see the service date column. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Gear icon and select Custom Form styles.
  2. Next, locate the invoice template you use and select Edit.
  3. Proceed to the Content tab.
  4. Then, select the table where the service date is located.
  5. In the lower left part of the page click the Show more activity options.
  6. From there, check the Collapse activity rows box.
  7. When finished, click Done.

Refresh the QBO page. Then, create an invoice again and check if you can now see the Service date in the line item.

On the other hand, you may want to switch to the old invoice layout if this happens when you're in the new one.

However, if the issue persists, I recommend reaching out to our phone support team to further investigate the issue. You can also request a screen-sharing session so they can check your setup.

Moreover, if you have a customer who you invoice regularly with the same product or services, you can easily make it a recurring transaction. For detailed instructions, read this article: Create recurring transactions in QuickBooks Online.

I had several invoices where the date column was there but all dates were blank even though I had entered dates for each line.

Changing templates/settings did not change this, and it was only happening on some invoices.

I found that I was able to “un-glitch” these invoices by changing each date, saving the invoice, changing the date back to what they should be, and saving again.

The dates display and print after doing this, but I haven’t to do it on each invoice.

Hope this helps someone, and I hope this helps the dev team narrow down a fix.

Thank you for posting, @mtpropane.

I appreciate your efforts in trying to troubleshoot on your own. And, I realize how it can be time-consuming and inconvenient for you to manually edit the dates of each of your invoices. Let's go through another troubleshooting to see if this will work.

To start, please open a private browsing window by using the keyboard shortcuts specific to your browser:

  • Google Chrome: Press Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: Press Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Microsoft Edge: Press Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Safari: Press Command + Shift + N

Opening a private browser ensures that your browsing history is not saved. Open the QuickBooks Online (QBO) page in this window and try to create an invoice again to check if the dates appear correctly. If using the private browsing mode resolves the issue, you can return to your regular browser and clear its cache for a fresh start. If the issue persists in private browsing mode, consider switching to a different supported web browser.

Moreover, if you've done this troubleshooting already, I highly recommend you contact our support team for further assistance. They can securely review your account and conduct a thorough investigation to resolve the issue.

Additionally, you can visit this article for guidance regarding customizing invoices.

Furthermore, this will help you record invoice payment in QuickBooks Online to keep correct financial records.
