Solved

Why is the bank feed now masking transaction details with "x"? It used to be perfect. Perhaps OAuth? (e.g. bank shows "invoice 201A" but QBO imports as "invoice xxxA").

This was caused by an issue involving the new integration with Chase bank and has been fixed.

Hi Joe,

Yes, it's possible that the OAuth can be the reason why the invoice number shows as X. Let's update the connection to help fix the issue.

Here's how:

  1. Go to Bookkeeping, select Transactions, then select Bank transactions.
  2. Find the notification and select Update now. This takes you to your bank's website.
  3. Sign in as the primary account user and authorize the connection.

From there, the system sends us data so we can start downloading transactions.

You can also browse this article as your guide in ensuring that the transactions are put in the correct accounts: Categorize and match online bank transactions.

I'm always around if you need help downloading transactions.

Thank you for your reply, Adrian. However, I don't have any problems actually downloading the transactions or linking the bank account. I've had it set up for years and use it daily, and the accounts are pulling in as expected except for this new masking.

From what I can tell, as of just a few months ago QuickBooks Online started employing this masking which is very annoying. I'm wondering if there's a way to remove it--pull in the exact Bank Text / Description as shown on the banking website and display it to me.

Previously, all banking text would come in as expected. For example a note that a customer entered on a wire payment would have that text along with everything else. Now even that custom text/memo on ACH or wire transactions pull in masked like for confidentiality, replacing numbers with "x". In fact, I can see from testing that all digits in the field EXCEPT for the last four digits are masked, no matter the placement.

For example:

Actual bank text on transaction: BOOK TRANSFER CREDIT B/O: CUSTOMER NAME INC HOUSTON TX [removed] US REF: INVOICE 12.345A/PAYMENT RETAINER TRN: 67890123456JO

It used to be that that exact text would pull into QuickBooks when doing the daily update from the bank feed.

After some QuickBooks change, what it is now importing: BOOK TRANSFER CREDIT B/O: CUSTOMER NAME INC HOUSTON TX xxxxx-xxxx US REF: INVOICE xx.xxxA/PAYMENT RETAINER TRN: xxxxxxx3456JO

See? It's masking all numbers like for confidentiality except the last four. And it does not matter the placement of the last four. If there happened to only be four digits in the entire line, the entire line will import properly even if it started with four numbers. It's now frustrating to not have this detail because it requires logging into the banking website to see what it was whereas previously we just had this information stored in QuickBooks.

Can you please explain how to reverse this change? Is it a setting that we can control as customers? Or is it some back end change that QuickBooks made? How can we see the digits again?

Thanks!

I understand your need to see the transaction details back when your bank syncs with QuickBooks Online, @baldwinmbb.

I appreciate the info that you've shared. Considering that you were to see these details before, may I know the name of your financial institution/bank? This way, I can check while using my resources here if it has a specific solution.

In addition, I can review if there ongoing updates on how your bank brings up transactions to QuickBooks Online and share these details if there are any changes.

Please let us know. I'll make sure you'll get taken care of. Keep safe, and have a prosperous business year ahead.

Any resolution to this yet?  I too am having this issue with Chase bank.  It is very frustrating to have set up Rules specifically designed to take care of very detailed transactions based on these numbers that are now coming in masked. If I now have to go and download per the last suggestion, although a good suggestion, it simply adds more billable time my client simply refuses to pay!  On top of that QBO already increased their fees again of which the client is furious over.  How much more inefficiencies and price increases are we to absorb not to mention lose simply due to having to find these posts and join in on them??!!
As for me, who came from the very beginning of Quickbooks and who sees all the inefficiencies in all that goes on, it simply becomes more and more unbearable to continue on with this program.  My clients continue to drop off left and right due to these "LITTLE" things of which Intuit does not see as HUGE issues...
C'mon people... Start using your noodle a bit more before implementing changes simply to justify your salaries for another week...

Fine.  I'll go and waste more time on this subject then I care too.  I did read it briefly and although they "claim" to be making our lives easier by making this switch, I don't see anything about how this plays into the already countless hours we spent developing "Rules" based on these transactions as they were.  BUT, as you say, go and give them feedback as they have no idea what the community is going through.  Why don't they know?  Because they never asked!  They just went forward and did!!

Ya know what, never mind.  I'm just barking up a tree.

August 30, 2023

Me too! I handle 4 companies in QB On Line and it is really difficult to match my banking transactions with the data "masked".  I tried the button of Feedback as it is suggested on this conversation, but  it does absolutely nothing.   Please stop making unnecessary changes!

Yea this is so annoying, the masking eliminates all of the rules that were in placed based on the masked data. You guys need to fix this ASAP

September 8, 2023

Please fix this. We bookkeep for multiple companies who transfer to each other and we cannot tell which is which because they are masked with X's

It's great to have you here! I have some details that I want to share, Tom.

Before we start, may I know what is the name of your bank? Many banks are switching to a new connection service called OAuth. This entails more security when transmitting information between the bank's system and QuickBooks Online (QBO). This is also the main reason why some information is masked with X's.

On the other hand, QuickBooks is dependent on the information you share.

You can manually upload bank transactions from our bank and manually import them to see the information if you want to show the data you need: I've added these steps to show you how.

  1. Select Bank transactions from the BOOKMARKS ▼.
Tip: You can also select Bank transactions from the Transactions tab in the MENU ▼.
  2. Select the blue tile for the account you want to upload the transactions into.
  3. Select the Link account dropdown and then Upload from file.
  4. Select Drag and drop or select files and select the file you downloaded from your bank. Then select Continue.
  5. In the QuickBooks account ▼ dropdown, select the account you want to upload the transactions into. Then select Continue.
  6. Follow the onscreen steps to match the columns on the file with the correct fields in QuickBooks. Then select Continue.
  7. Select the transactions you would like to import. Then select Continue.
  8. Select Yes.
  9. When you accept your transactions, select Done.

Furthermore, QuickBooks downloads the latest transaction. Learn more on how to add and categorize them. Go through this article: Categorize Online Bank Transactions In QuickBooks Online.

This seems to be either a QBO or Chase bank issue. I would like to know right now, whose service i should cancel immediately?
They cannot be serious, our books were automated based on company names and transaction numbers. Now we have $1000s of dollars a month in extra accountant fees just to investigate what each transactions are actually doing!
Guys, this is an issue that needs to either be resolved with chase or with QBO. Either way, QBO CAN AND SHOULD advocate on our behalf to fix this issue. Bare MINIMUM allow users to opt out of the masking.

September 27, 2023

Just joining the bandwagon on this - because sometimes it takes an army to make changes.  I thought it was something wrong on my side - but seeing it is most definitely not.

I cannot tell you how frustrating it is with all the XXXXX's - and yes, it's Chase.  (Small example - Union 76 transactions all download with "XX-" followed with a info you have to decipher if it's fuel or not.)

We have 30+ clients who use a Chase account of some sort.  The majority are online and every one of them has this same issue.  And no, I do not want to go in 'manually' to download the transactions.  There's just too many - and besides that is completely unreasonable.  Nor do I have time to go through this VERY LONG comment string of others with the same issue to see if there is another work-around.  JUST FIX IT.  PLEASE!

Someone just posted a week or so ago and this string started back in July.  And it's still not working right.

QuickBooks -- you need to do better.

AND, don't get me started on an unnecessary "upgrade" to the program recently (which all accountants I know dislike with a flaming passion of a 1000 suns).....

You may as well get the answer now rather than later since they haven't got a clue!

Actually, we're probably dealing with just one owner of Quickbooks who sits in his/her chair all day long sucking down soda all day long playing video games checking in on some of the software in his/her portfolio and screwing around with it just to see how furious the community can get!  And then there are a select few that are out there who are paid a few dollars to give us the best answer we're ever going to receive, since I guess they don't have any influence with the owner either (weird).  Are ya ready?  Here it comes!

It's great to have you here! I have some details that I want to share, (enter current name).

On a more serious note, all I can say is how glad I am retired and take care of a couple of clients here or there.  Knowing what businesses are going through on a daily basis is enough to make someone loyal to QB like me from the beginning of time, switch to a new company, as there are simply far too many issues that QBO faces as an efficient bookkeeping system.  Yes, I said it "BOOKKEEPING"  that's what it is supposed to be all about "BOOKKEEPING.  Instead, it has turned into some sort of Mario Brothers or Space Invaders game, not knowing whence the next rock or bullet will come from.  It's been a long time since I used the desktop version but I'm sure it's still rock solid, except for the issue of Banking of course.  Now that this is my hobby, NOT,  I only hope I'm around long enough to be asked to try a new software by one of my clients and of course be paid for it.  Otherwise, I'll just keep on struggling away at it.

Too all those out there trying to make a living doing bookkeeping for their clients and have the power, I can only suggest to you, start doing your homework and begin dual systems with different software and make the investment.  In the end it will pay off!  Good Luck :).

October 4, 2023

Same! I am having the exact same issue. I just spent 2 hours chatting with support trying to figure out why all transactions are masked with XXXX, which was just wasted time. I should've known better, for some reason it didn't occur to me to do a simple google search.

This change has made my bookkeeping experience a living hell, it has rendered this software useless IMHO. So the solutions now is to manually import all the transactions just so we can get the complete unaltered transaction description? This is infuriating! Also, they keep hiking their prices but provide zero improvements. I'm honestly done with QB, ready to switch to something better. Anyone. has any recommendations for an alternative to QBO?

Well GGGGGOOOOOLLLLYYYYYYEEEEEE!!!!

So for THREE MONTHS we're sitting here without a clue "but wait, let's not say a word until we know we can fix it, yeah that's the right thing to do" - UGH!!!

Perhaps you might think in the future to say something like "We just did a new integration and are experiencing issues and are working to correct them.  We'll keep you posted..."

But no, keep us guessing, yep, that's the ticket!!

So infuriating!!

Thanks for keeping our BP on the rise...More pills for our doctor to prescribe.
