Question

Why will the chart of accounts on QBO not show all the fields to edit? I cannot edit the type of account or the detail type or the account number. Seems like a glitch

I have tried several browsers. The account type field will pop up for a split second and disappear... I have tried multiple computers as well

Welcome to the Community, @john-gobloombuil. I'll share information that can help you resolve the issue in editing the Chart of accounts details.

I appreciate you trying to resolve the issue by using other browsers to edit some details. I have checked and found no report or investigation about this concern.

We can start by using a private browser instead of a regular browser. Here are the different keyboard shortcuts to open a private browser:

  • Google Chrome: press Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: press Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Safari: press Command + Shift + N

If everything goes smoothly, switch to your default browser and delete its cache. Follow the instructions below based on the browser you're using: Clear cache and cookies to fix issues when using QuickBooks Online.

If you want to add subaccounts instead of editing the details, you can check this article to learn more about the process: Create subaccounts in your chart of accounts in QuickBooks Online.

Feel free to click the Reply button if you have additional questions about the Chart of accounts. I'm always here to help. Have a great day.

Thanks for performing the resolution provided by my colleague, JustLearning1. We can verify your account first then let's start with the subaccount if you have one. I'll share more details about this.

Before doing so, did you encounter any specific error message after clicking the Save button? Any additional details, such as screenshots, would help me provide you with correct information.

We can change the type of account as long as it is not a default account in QBO. First, you can visit this article to know what accounts can't be modified in the Chart of Accounts in QuickBooks: Manage default and special accounts in your QuickBooks Online chart of accounts.

Once you confirm the specific account is not a default account, you'll have to start from the subaccounts editing an account type if there are any. Then, change the parent account when all of them have been adjusted:

  1. Go to Settings, then select Chart of Accounts.
  2. Locate the first subaccount to change.
  3. From the Action column dropdown menu, select Edit.
  4. Select the Save account under dropdown to choose a new account type and pick the appropriate detail type in the Tax form section dropdown.
  5. Change the Account Type and Detail Type. Ensure the Is sub-account is unchecked in the meantime.
  6. Tap  Save and you'll be prompted that changing the Account Type may affect your accounting and reporting.
  7. Hit Yes in the prompt to change the account.

After that, visit this article and go to the Return accounts to sub-accounts status section to link them back to the parent account: Change the type of an existing parent account or subaccount in QuickBooks Online.

If you can't go through changing the detail type, please reach out to our Live support team to have them check your account and further assist you.

I'm delighted to introduce you to the QuickBooks Live Expert Assisted team. This team consists of experienced professionals who can help you manage your finances and categorize transactions, providing guidance to support your business needs.
