I'm concerned as this isn't the situation we wanted you to experience, Glen. Let me provide steps to help display the expense category list.

Before we begin, are you using the mobile app to access these transactions? If so, I'll share the basic troubleshooting steps for Android apps to access the most up-to-date information and resolve common app problems. Refer to the steps below:

  1. Go to Menu at the top right.
  2. Click Settings, then Refresh Data.
  3. Select Yes to confirm.

If it's IOS, please know we have an ongoing investigation (INV-105728) where some categories are missing or not displaying as expected when using the QuickBooks IOS mobile app. To have this address, I recommend contacting our QuickBooks support team to add you to the list of affected users. It will also ensure that you receive prompt updates on the investigation.

Our support hours are Monday-Friday, 6 AM to 6 PM PT, and Saturday, 6 AM to 3 PM PT, Advanced, any time, any day.

If you are accessing QuickBooks Online (QBO) through browser, I recommend performing this troubleshooting to remove the excessive cache stored and to avoid system performance issues like missing categories in chart of accounts. To begin, open your QBO account in an incognito/private window to prevent the browser history from being saved.

Refer to these keyboard shortcuts based on the browser you're using:

  • For Firefox or Microsoft Edge, press Ctrl + Shift + P.
  • For Chrome, press Ctrl + Shift + N.
  • For Safari, hold down Command + Shift + N.

If it works in incognito, you'll have to clear the cache of your regular browser. This removes the history or log of sites to start with a clean slate. If the steps above don't work, use another supported browser as an alternative.

Additionally, I'm adding an article to help you categorize the automatically downloaded transactions: Categorize online bank transactions.

Please let us know if you have other queries about the expense category. We'll do our best to help you. Take care.
