Question

As a merchant in BC Canada, can I charge my customers a credit card surcharge fee, to recoup the amount of money I pay to accept credit cards via QuickBooks Payments.

Hi there,

It's great that you've been using QuickBooks Online Payments to accept payments from your customers online! Offering online payment processing saves you and your customers time, making it easier to conduct your small business. I know how important it is to ensure you're following the best business practices, so I'll help point you in the right direction for advice on this matter.

I recommend consulting with your accountant to see if you're able to charge your customers a credit card surcharge fee to make up for the charges incurred from Payments. They're the best equipped to offer you business advice based on where you're located in Canada, and the best business practices at the time. If you're not already connected to an accountant, you can find one in your area here: Find an accountant.

If your accountant has advised you to charge this fee, you'll want to set up a non-inventory item related to the charges so you can invoice your customers appropriately. To set up a non-inventory item for "Service Fees", follow the steps listed here: Track your services or non-inventory items
