Hi judy-wone,

Adding customers to QuickBooks Online is a simple and straightforward process. I'd be happy to explain whether or not customers have unique ID numbers in QBO.

At this time, there's no ID number associated with customers you add to QuickBooks Online. That being said, you can create one yourself and enter it in the customer Notes section if you'd like to keep track of that information within your account.

To add notes to your customer's profile, you'll click the Sales tab, then select Customers. If you've already added the customer, click their name from the list, then select Edit. If you've not yet created the customer, click New Customer

Once you're on the customer profile, click the Notes tab and enter your customer ID number there. Click Save

I hope this helps as a useful workaround. I think having the option to generate customer ID numbers in QBO would be a great addition to the product, and I'd be happy to pass on your feedback to my team. I'd encourage you to submit feedback on your end as well, by clicking the Gear icon > Feedback

If you have any other questions, please reach out to our tech support team.

Cheers.

We are currently using the Account # (under Payment Settings) to keep track of customers' internal ID. However, we have quite a few duplicates.

1) Is there a way to make this field unique? and also mandatory?

2) another option would be to create a custom field, which can be set as mandatory. But can it be set as unique?

Thank you

Thanks for chiming in on this thread. I see the benefit of having the two functions you've pointed out above, and since they aren't available, I recommend sending feedback to our engineers. You can do this by clicking on the Gear icon and looking for Feedback. Feel free to ask other questions.
