How can I enter a split payment in sales receipt? Or how can I change a sales receipt to an invoice?

Hey there and welcome to the Community!

Sales Receipt is used in QuickBooks if you've received the full payment at the time of the sale, using cash, cheque, or credit card. Similarly to when you go shopping at your local supermarket - you receive a sales receipt because you've paid in full for your groceries. Let me go over this a little further so you know how best to record your sales transactions.

It's my understanding that when you record a split payment, you're recording the entire payment at one time, but maybe in separate parts, or with more than one payment method. An example would be paying part of the payment in cash, and the remainder by card. In order to do this with a Sales Receipt in QuickBooks Online, you'd need to record 2 separate transactions for each payment method or each portion of the payment. If that's not quite what you're looking to do, you can start by entering an Invoice.

Once you've entered an invoice from the + New button, you can record as many payments against it as necessary. This means you can enter payments from multiple payment methods. There isn't a way to convert a sales receipt into an invoice, so you'll have to delete the sales receipt and create an invoice, re-entering the details.

If you'd like to share your thoughts on having a split payment option for sales receipts, I encourage you to submit Feedack. Do that by navigating to the Gear icon and selecting Feedback. These messages go to our product development team, and they take these into consideration when adding new features and improving existing ones.

Let me know if you need further clarification and I'll be happy to deliver. Take care!
