Question

How can I set up QuickBooks invoicing without a 15-digit business number? I do not have tax numbers or collect it yet, as I run a small business.

On the Business section, it asks me for my 15-digit business number (presumably so that QuickBooks can add and collect taxes properly on my future invoices) I only have a 9-digit business number. In Quebec, a business is not obligated to register for a 15-digit tax number until their sales reach $30k in a given year. Is there a way I can still do this? Perhaps a page where I can "uncheck" collecting taxes in my invoices or something?

Hello contact95,

Thanks for joining us in the QuickBooks Community and for being a part of the QuickBooks family! It's great to hear that you're getting started with setting up your business, and I can appreciate how navigating all the fields might be a bit daunting. I'm here to guide you through them.

With what you describe here about QuickBooks invoicing, it sounds to me like you're looking to setup QuickBooks Payments. It's a great add-on feature for giving your customers the option to pay you online via credit card. When you're setting up to apply, the Business Info section will prompt you to enter a 15-digit business number. This section helps us verify your business since the Payments add-on deals with live money movement between you and your customer, rather than simply entering it in your books and handling the money outside of the software.

I can see how only having a 9-digit business number would complicate this sign-up process. At this time, there isn't a spot to check off that you don't collect sales tax to bypass the 15-digit business number. I hear what you're saying about not meeting the government threshold yet where you would have to collect sales tax, and the check box you mention is a great suggestion. I recommend submitting it as feedback to our product developers via the steps in this article: How do I submit feedback?

In the meantime, I encourage you to check out other options available through the Apps tab in QuickBooks Online. This tab gives you access to search through our list of partner applications that can build on what QuickBooks has to offer. There are even other payment processor options you can consider there.

I wish you success and growth with your business! Feel free to let me know if you have further questions. :)
