Question

How do I add markup to a service if the amount of the service varies and thus cannot be entered into the product and service list?

Hi MCCM,

It's great to see you're taking an active approach with setting up your products and services! Adding a markup to your products and services really helps to automate income calculations, so it can save you a lot of time in the long run. Depending on the specific QuickBooks product you're using, there are a a few things we can try to add a markup to services with variable prices.

In QuickBooks Online, you can easily achieve this if there's a billable expense associated. You can set this up if you have QuickBooks Online Plus. To get started:

  1. Click on the Gear icon, then select Account and Settings.
  2. Open the Expenses tab from the left sidebar.
  3. In the Bills and expenses section, activate Make expenses and items billable.
  4. Select Save, then Done.

Here's a great article with additional details, as well as instructions for including a markup: Enter billable expenses

If there isn't a billable expense associated with the service, you will need to calculate the marked-up price and enter it on an invoice. We do our best to implement customer suggestions, so if you think this would be a positive feature for QuickBooks Online you can submit feedback directly to our engineers.

Hope this helps.
