Hi there usergr8weatherstatio,

Welcome to the QuickBooks family! I'm glad you've decided to give our accounting solution a try by way of a free trial. QuickBooks makes doing your business' books a simple, streamlined process, and I'm confident you'll love the features you have at your disposal. Managing your customer list is an important part of running your business, it helps keep invoices and other customer transactions organized. Let me go over how to change a customer type.

You've mentioned that you have a trial of QBO Pro Canada. In Canada we offer three versions of QuickBooks Online: EasyStart, Essentials, and Plus. In this case I think you mean QuickBooks Desktop Pro. No matter which version of QuickBooks you use you'll be able to manage your customers. Currently the only option you have in QuickBooks Desktop for changing type, is to change it to other names, such as changing a customer to a supplier or employee or vice versa. There are two options available to change name type:

Option 1: Delete the customer and recreate it under the correct type. Navigate to the Customer Centre, then right click the name and select Delete Customer:Job

Option 2: Make the customer inactive and recreate it under the correct type. If there are transactions associated with the customer this is the best option. From the Customer Centre right click the customer and select Make Customer:Job inactive.

If you are in fact using one of our QuickBooks Online product offerings, accessed through your internet browser, you won't have the option to select a customer type. You'll simply be able to add new customers by following the steps below. You can delete or make them inactive by selecting using the drop down in the Action column from the Customer Center if you need to change a customer to an employee or supplier.

  1. Hover over the Sales menu from the left.
  2. Choose the Customers tab.
  3. Select New Customer.
  4. Enter your customer's information.
  5. Select Save.

I've included some articles below that I think you'll find helpful:

If you have any additional details you'd like to provide in regards to what you're trying to accomplish, I'd love to provide you with additional information. The first step is to determine whether you're using our online offering or Desktop. Just drop a line here in the Community if there's anything else I can help with.
