Hello jjeconway-live-c,

I'm so excited to hear that you've chosen QuickBooks Online to manage your business books and that you're embarking on entering your first transactions into the software. Making sure you have all the relevant details, including sales tax, is vital. I can lend a hand with this.

When you first create a QuickBooks Online account, many features are already configured with the program, such as invoicing and expensing. For other features, such as sales tax, the first step to using them is making sure you'd turned the sales tax module on through the Taxes tab. If you haven't done that yet, I've got a great article here that can help you get started: Set up and use sales tax in QuickBooks Online

If you've already done that and are still having trouble, I recommend taking a few troubleshooting steps, namely clearing cache, trying a private browser, and using a different browser type all together. Because QuickBooks Online is a cloud platform, it sometimes needs this kind of refresh via clearing cache or changing browser to ensure that the program is communicating properly with the cloud and its functions. Please give those things a shot to see if they make a difference.

Those should get you back on track, but in the event they don't, it'll be helpful to know what exactly is happening in the books that's preventing you from using sales tax on your invoices. Feel free to elaborate more in a response here and I'd be happy to see what I can do to help.
