Probably silly question but how can I setup my account so that receipts are sent automatically to clients when a payment is made?

This isn't a silly question at all! Issuing your customers receipts is a good sign of communication between you and them and makes sure everyone is on the same page with the money that has been exchanged. QuickBooks Online is designed to include this sort of capability, and I'd be happy to go over this with you.

When you're working in QuickBooks Online and use the Receive payment feature to apply a payment against an invoice, there are a few options to choose from to save: Save and close, Save and new, and Save and send. To make sure your customer has a payment receipt for the payment received and that you're logging, all it takes is making sure there's an email in the Customer email field of the transaction and then clicking Save and send.

If you're working with Sales receipts, you can also Save and send them to your customers. Keep in mind that invoice payments and sales receipts are separate transaction types, so when you're working with invoices, you'll want the Receive payment option to ensure the amount is applied to that transaction. In the event you're also using QuickBooks Payments, your customer should receive an automated receipt when they process their payment through that system.
