Question

Taxes are Calculated Wrong - Missing a few cents!

Hello,

We migrated to QB online 2 days ago with the hope that we can have the freedom to access it from anywhere and have a B2B solution implemented.

However after been happy with QB desktop premier for many years, there are lots of issues with QB online.

Issue I have right now, the taxes in the invoices are calculated wrong.

I have an invoice where the subtotal is $772.20, Ontario tax 13% should be $100.39, well it calculates $100.36.

Looks to me the $0.20 do not count, if we multiply $772 x .13 then we get the $100.36.

Please, do not ask me to go clear the browser cache or go in incognito mode.

I would like to get this fixed.

Any ideas?

Hello dionnelema,

It's awesome to hear that you've migrated to QuickBooks Online after using the QuickBooks Desktop software for so long. I know having the mobility of a cloud software can make a lot of difference for a business, but it's also important to make sure that it's meeting your needs and reliable. I can go over sales tax calculations in QuickBooks Online, and direct you to how to get further assistance.

QuickBooks Online and QuickBooks Desktop calculate sales tax the same way—making the calculations and rounding line-by-line on your forms to come up with the total in the calculated sales tax field. Often when the total is a few cents different than what you're expecting, it's due to that calculation and rounding process. Since you're seeing only a few cents difference, where you're expecting the total sales tax to be $100.39 but instead seeing $100.36, it could be due to that process. What you can do to test is go through your line items one-by-one and do the rounding yourself manually to see if you get the same result as what QuickBooks Online did.

I want to assure you that both of these versions of QuickBooks are designed to follow government guidelines for these calculations, and you can read more about these differences here: Why do I occasionally notice penny rounding differences? The article primarily talks about running payroll, but what's mentioned there also applies to sales tax. Feel free to submit feedback about this process if you'd like to share it's impact with our product development team: How do I submit feedback?

If you don't have multiple line items or you don't think what I've mentioned about rounding is what's happening in your books, then it's best to connect with a member of our support team outside of this forum. They will take you through some troubleshooting and gather your details to determine what's happened and how to move forward with these calculations. Here's how to get in touch.
